What do you think of this?

My friend was telling me about a script he saw that puts a limit on content trial surfers can download. For instance they download their limit, and then a window pops up and says something like, "if you want to download more, you must stay on for a monthly membership".

What are your thoughts on limiting trials to a certain amount of content? Anyone know where you can get such a script? I'd like to try it out with my own trials for a bit.

Good question JenC. I think there are two schools of thought on this one. The first sees it as a way of maximizing the trials they get, Because they eliminate the surfer who has joined solely to come in and for 3 days rape the site of as much content as they can. Offline explorer is a perfect tool for doing just this. It also prompts a surfer into signing up or allowing the recurring membership to go through, as they are obviously interested in the content.
The second school of thought will see this as kind of a scam, or jerking the surfer around, and won't use it for the real fear of having a large increase in chargebacks. The wording on the tour would have to have a lot of thought put into it to prevent someone screaming FRAUD!!
I think as long as you cover yourself well on the tour and gallery pages/free sites that someone could give it a trial run of a few months to see what effects if any it had on either member retention or chargebacks.

Well if the tours don't say "unlimited access" or anything like that, I'd imagine you're in the clear. You could also reinforce it by saying something like "trial sneak peek" meaning that they're only getting a quick peek and not full access.

I might try it and see what it does for retention.

Jenc,

Hi. I just joined your affilaite program.

Actually, 1st I read about it was from an FTV content update e-mail, but I didn't sign up at that time.

I like the idea, but actually I would like to see trials just disappear altogether.

JenC, are you willing to share this script with some of us? I would be keen on giving it a go, I think it would be awesome for setting up a ppv site.

cheers,
Luke

Thanks Alphawolf. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you to help you with promotions.

Cleo, I agree with you about getting rid of trials and I actually tried it about a year ago but I noticed no difference in income so I brought them back.

Chilihost, I don't have a script yet. I was asking here if anyone knew of one. I might have to get one custom built.
