Javascript - bad?

Please have a look at this page. It's typical of pages on my site. Is this a "bad" page in any way?

Hopefully it's user-friendly ...

but is it Search-Engine friendly?

I need to know.

All opinions are more than welcome. Please feel free to offer whatever comment may come to mind - I won't be offended.

Thanks in advance

<edit>
Fucking typical - I forgot to mention the key points I'm interested in!

The floating menu and banner - are they good or bad?

</edit>

It probably has some effect, what with all the code taking up space at the beginning of the page.

But not necessarily a huge effect, compared to whatever link scheme you have pointing to the page.

Would you say that the floating stuff is worth using? I'm looking for plus and minus points here.

Well, I'll just give you my opinion about it.

The floating banner thingy may well increase your sales-per-vistor, and if it does, the increase in profit is probably worth the extra space it takes up at the top of the page. (You need to test this- it might just irritate your visitors)

The menu thingy arguably neither increases your profitability or even the overall usability of the page, but it definitely takes up a big chunk of the top of the page and pushes relevant text further down the page. Overall, I think it produces a loss for you.

A link list category page is a hybrid animal- it's not a pure search engine page, where you want relevant text concentrated at the top of the page, and your primary goal is to position well and attract qualified clicks. A link list page needs to be navigable and friendly to the general flow of surfers thru the list, and it also needs to be able to direct the surfer to his favorite niche if he lands on it by "just exploring".

I think the javascript floating menu is a distraction from that- simple buttons or text links at both the top and bottom of your page probably does the job better.

Eman,

I would agree with everything Bill outlined.. I too think a simple html menu would be better from an SE point of view

eman I allways thought those things moving down the page were annoying to the eyes and I left pages with them.. IMO I cant surf the page in peace.

Might be an idea to use a cross-browser compatible menu. I don't see any menu in my Opera browser. |badidea|
