Linkdump Administration/Promotion input plz

Hello,
I am a newwb to this board.

I am starting up a linkdump and I am looking for any pointers on their administration. I would love to get any input on :

The best ways to utilise them for traffic.

I see that it is not a good thing to put banners on them as I see some linkdump biggies do not like it. I guess that some discreet links to my site / links will get me traffic.

I figure it will be SE food and feed the SE's . What are the main benifits to running one in your opinions ? How does the owner best utilise the traffic that comes to them in your opinion. How does one best promote them in your experience ?
