That could be a number of things - missing index.html page, server move & files not uploaded, etc.

Or they could be gone forever

While this may not be the case, I know that sometimes sites die near the end of the month because they have hard limit bandwidth deals, and they go over.

I am not sure that this is the case here, but you never know.
