Need Opinions From SEO Gurus
This is kinda longwinded but it boils down to a simple question at the end.
When I first started Fetish Philes I had the site set up to display 50 links per page per category, i.e. the script would generate additional pages at 50 links each when cats had more than 50 links in them. I discontinued that a few months ago and decided to make each category one page, period. The problem is that some of my cats now have several hundred links in them, and I'm trying to decide what to do from an SEO point of view on this. I don't really want the SEs to see my high submission categories as link farms so I'm considering breaking the cats back up into multiple pages. Plus, those cat pages are starting to get pretty weighty (some up to 190k) and I don't want to alienate my dialup surfers. I've also always heard that in general SEs tend to like bigger sites with more pages. I also like to rotate how the links are sorted to give older links some fresh traffic from time to time. If I rotate the sorting on multiple pages, however, all the pages for a given cat will change every couple days and I honestly have no idea if that's a plus or minus from an SEO standpoint. Since Google is finally starting to give me some real love, I really don't want to fuck that up. I use X Power Links, so in addition to everything above with multiple pages for a single cat I'll have my cat hard link trades displayed several times, and I don't know if that will dilute the value of my incoming links by essentially linking back to every link partner 4 or 5 times instead of just once. So really I'm trying to figure out if breaking the cats back up into multiple pages is likely to fuck me. TIA for any thoughts on the subject. I've been thinking this over for about a week now and frankly my head's about to explode ![]() |

Took the hint.

Madmax: Google only caches 101k per page. Anything beyond that is gone into the ether. Do they still consider past the 101k in ranking the page? I am not sure.

To answer Alex's point - yes they do follow links and look at the whole page - However - that said, there are numerous benefits to breaking down the pages to a point where you have less links per page - Googles' recommendation has always been 100 links per page - Ive never seen it actually hurt anyone to have more.
As far as the real benefits of doing the seperate pages - first is the page rank distribution - more pages will naturally get less page rank from the "main" pages that you are being linked to from outside, but that page rank will naturally increase itself because of the extra pages you have linking back (I assume) to your index page so that there is no overall loss. Spidering will take a little longer with all of the pages, but then, you can definitely change the text content of each of the page2,3 etc to rank for more terms. As far as rotating the content, it is a definite boost as Google is very fond of "updated" pages |

Maybe you could try having say 100 links per page, with multiple pages in a cat all linked to each other (to even out the distribution of PR), cat trades just on the first page for each cat, new sites on the first page of their cat and a daily random "hot list" to keep the traffic flowing to older sites.

I break down my categories into multiple pages for a number of reasons, and I try to do category page link trades on those page 2, page 3, etc. pages. And like Linkster said, page 2 targets a slightly different variation of the keyphrase.
That being said, if anyone wants to do some page 2 cat trades, hit me up.

Thanks guys, looks like I'll be breaking the cats back up
![]() Unfortunately, while I love my script it doesn't allow me to target different keywords and such on the additional pages for a given category...just re-uses the same page as the first page with different links listed so hardlink trades and such are just duplicated. Still, in the long run I think (based on the advice I've gotten and my gut feeling) that it's the right thing to do ![]() |

I don't know what link list script you're using Max, but if you can, just use it to build plain lists of links on blank pages and then insert those into your html pages using an SSI. Then you control all the SEO factors on your pages and the script just does the grunt work of managing the links. If you're using GT I can show you how to do that.
