Katrina One Year Anniversary
Unless you are hiding under a rock, you have to know that today is the one year anniversary of Katrina hitting New Orleans. I watched NBC's special last night that was a kind of behind the scenes of the making of the news last year. It was really good and enlightening. Brian Williams from NBC had to have Federal Agents circle him while he did the broadcast last year because they all feared for his life. He carried a case of Vienna Sausages to bargain for his life if his car was ever broken into.
Of course, it wasn't until one year ago tonight when the government blew up the levees to save the middle class neighborhoods. (Just kidding...or am I?) After all, that is what they did in 1927 on film without hesitation. |

Jim - thats ok - I see the prez has an answer that will save New Orleans - he spoke about it today during the prayer fest they had down there - basically - if they get to drill more for oil off of Louisiana then New Orleans will get more recovery money

Correction Jim. Today is the anniversary of Katrina devastating the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The news has, for a year, focused on New Orleans simply because New Orleans is the epitome of boo hoo bullshit political finger pointing.
While the Mississippi Gulf Coast was basically wiped clean by the surge and took on the full force of Katrina's winds, New Orleans had a levee breach after the fact. They had standing flood waters for a long while. The surge came and then receded here. We didn't have homes and businesses standing in the flood waters for extended periods like New Orleans did for one very simple reason... we had nothing left. The immense surge just washed us away. To this day, there is little recovery in New Orleans. They prefer to sit and whine and bellyache about all the bad shit that has happened and point fingers and play the blame game all while crying "poor me". The Mississippi Gulf Coast is on a fast track to recovery. Our people have faced the adversities of the destruction and changes in life wrought by that bitch named Katrina and we are on the brink of not only recovery, but prosperity, all due to a strong sense of determination and drive, coupled with pride, integrity and lots and lots of good old fashioned hard work. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been largely ignored, much due to the fact that we are busting our balls rebuilding rather than whining and trying to get the pity of the nation. We have had astounding numbers of volunteers and aid pour in and we very much appreciate every bit of it. Reports say we have had over 350,000 volunteers come to the coast to help us. Each and every day there is a sign of new life added back to our lives, a sign of hope for so many here that have been largely overshadowed by the bullshit in New Orleans. I lived a block off the beach in Long Beach, Ms. the day Katrina arrived and lost everything. We rode the storm about 3 miles north of where we currently have moved back home to, in North Pass Christian, Ms. Katrina sent Carol, my fiancee, 2 cats, and I on a whirlwind relocation to Missouri for 9 months, but alas, we are back home on the wonderful Mississippi Coast a year later. It will be a long long time before full recovery is made, but, here in the great state of Mississippi, we are making steady progress. Read the true story of heroism, destruction, and perseverance at the Sunherald .

FanTC - definitely totally agree (of course I couldnt being in MS also) - and have been one of those volunteers as have a few others I know here - this I know for sure - those that can get past the political BS will survive and work together for what really matters - the rest will just keep playing their games (not trying to minimize anything - but the news media would have the rest of the country think that NO was the only "story" that exists)

Linkster, I believe it is about 4 days from the anniversary of the day you called us to offer help after we got stranded in Jackson for 15 hours during evacuation.
Again, even though we had already gotten back on the road and were in Missouri when you called, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's amazing how lost and alone we felt then. Just knowing that there were people that gave a damn was a pivotal key in our recovery. Thank you for trying to help us, and thank you and your friends for volunteering and helping the people in need. As a sample of Mississippi Recovery, tonight Carol and I rode to Biloxi and checked out the Beau Rivage's grand reopening. We then came back through Long Beach and stopped at the Cajun Crawfish Hut and had fried shrimp, crawfish, oysters, gator, and mushrooms. Next time you are in the area, be sure and let me know and the eats are on me as a small token of my gratitude. On behalf of myself and the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Thank you.

Damn good to hear you're getting back on your feet FanTC! From everything I've read and heard, you folks from MS are some strong willed, down to earth folks who can't be kept down
![]() And yea, I agree NO is way too much in the spotlight. Though some of that is probably still because of the fuck ups at all levels down there immediately following the storm. Personally, my hats off to you folks man...takes some big balls to get up, dust oneself off and recover from something like you've been through ![]() |

Good to hear things are getting back to something like normal. Karla on TNB was doing her best to drum up support for you at the time, quite a pushy 'girl' once she gets going, lol. Sory I couldnt help more than I did at the time, but I've still got your paypal details :-) Maybe if I win the lottery ... All the best from a sunny Scotland mr_ritto |
