Blog site with plain html?

Do blogs have to use RSS? I am totally new to to blogging.

My hubby recently set up a blog for our new HD site and he just set it up as a "standard" html page.

We're going to use it as a "diary" type of blog, to keep non members up to date with what is happening on our site ( w/pictures) , as well as just some daily chit-chat

Blogs don't HAVE to use RSS but it is your friend. Your setting up the blog for non-members (excellent usage btw) to keep them up to date. That can be made even more affective if the site outputs a RSS feed.

The reason, you might ask....cause I said....no really because then non-members who want to keep track of your site can add it to places like their "My Yahoo, Google, or MyMSN (as well as any favorite news reader they may have) and track you that way. Not having RSS takes some of the marketing benefits away from a blog.

Thanks for the reply hun.

My hubby and I are complete opposite of techies unfortunately. We briefly looked into learning a bit about RSS, and it seems like it would take us some time to grasp it, lol.

We started up lorshasworld.com in late 1999, and it took us into 2001 to finally get comfortable just uploading files to our site.

Once we get our new HD site launched and get our affiliate program underway, I'm going to crack the whip, and get the hubby learning RSS!

I haven't actually tried it but RSS Wizard looks like a pretty simple tool to convert your html into RSS.

Why not just use a blog script like WordPress, installed on your server, and therefore on your domain (i.e. www.lorshasworld.com/blog/) then all you have to do is add your blog entries and it creates the RSS feed for you. Plus you'll have the all the search engine and other benifits of using a bonified blog script.

Customizing the blog theme to match the look of your site wouldn't be difficult, and I'm sure you could easily find someone able to do that for a nominal fee if you didn't want to try it yourself.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd imagine your diary entries would be mostly text. It would be far quicker and more convenient to just automate the whole process rather then manually changing code or includes for each an every update.

Would probably save you like 1/2 an hour per entry which adds up quickly.

Wordpress may be the easiest script I've ever installed, non-techies do it all the time. If your still scared, I bet your hosts tech support would even install it for you.

Sounds great guys.

If my hubby can't do it, I'm sure the guys at xxxwebhosting would handle it for us. Been with them for 6 years, and absolutely love them!

Thanks so much for the helpful advice!

Why, might I ask, don't you simply use one of the wonderful free blogging programs out there which will manage your site and it's RSS all at once (and even ping all the update services).

I use Wordpress, but Movable type is good too, I don't know if Google has anything against adult sites using blogger, but it's completely free too.

I just feel like taking it from html to RSS is way too complicated and time intensive. A blog program will let you update using a WYSIWYG editor and everything. If you're not a techie, one of these programs is for you, IMHO.

Adult sites are slowly being pulled from blogger, or so I've read.

Sites that comply with the TOS are still there even though they are adult in nature....those that don't aren't. At least thats my experience.

So then it's just the element that tends to follow "adult" that's slowly being pulled off? Good to know.

How's your quest for an easier to update blog with rss coming along Lorsha?

rss and blogging

For making RSS i can recommend this tools:

1. Create RSS feed
- Feed Editor: WYSIWYG RSS feed creator

OR

- Feed Mix: Tool for re-mixing RSS feeds

2. Free RSS to HTML PHP script

Kind of on the back burner, but will be looking more into it soon. Should have my new HD site launched in a day or two!

Yeah, Wordpress is definitely the way to go. I've got quite a bit of experience (I've been using it for nearly two years now) with it. If you need any help, feel free to ask.

RSS Feeds are really useful, whether it's building "bookmarker" traffic or just setting up automatic pinging of your sites (free traffic is always good)!
