Social bookmarking sites, what to do with them.

I've been reading some mainstream boards today and found a bunch of lists with 500 or more social bookmarking sites. How can I use them to promote my mainstream site?

Do I need to put my urls in my own yahoo account and stuff like that?

So, how can I benefit from them?

I'm curious about this as well.

I've tried to work with these various social bookmarking sites here and there over the past few years (on both mainstream and adult sites), and while I have hope that someday I'll figure out how to make 'em work for me, they've never seemed to do much.

It seems like it takes some very juicy link bait, and lots of followers already, to get surfers to promote content for you (using these services).

Otherwise, the only thing I know how to do is bookmark my own pages myself, which so far has not proven to be worth the effort due to a lack of traffic from nearly all of these sites.

Maybe build up a sizable collection of bookmarks on a site and then link to that bookmark collection from other places?

Think of them as totally free backlinks and quick ways of getting the search engines to your site.

If I make a new site, then give it a digg - normally its showing in the serps within a couple of days

Some more reading with a few more ideas. http://www.traffictravis.com/newsletters/0493
This is part 4 of a 5 part series. Links to parts 1-3 are on the page. I'll post part 5 when I get the email tomorrow. Also for those that don't know, there is a free version of Traffic Travis that is helpful.
