29th March - In England and Wales, Straight people at last get equality with gay people today!
When a straight person forms a relationship with another straight person (where "forms a relationship with..." means "has regular sex with...") there comes the point where the other person expects you to make it all "legal" and get married. If you are a man this starts when she gives you gentle hints, if you don't take that hint it gets less and less gentle until it becomes an ultimatum (either "No more sex until we set the date" or "If we don't set a date, I'll leave you"). If you are a woman then the man usually goes straight for the proposal.
And even before your partner gets to this stage your friends and relatives (especially your parents) start asking pointedly "when are you two getting married?" Eventually you have no choice to give in, you have to get married - or live the rest of your life with no sex. But gay people don't have this problem. It is illegal for them to get married. So they have that get out. They can simply say "Of course I love you, I really want to marry you, but it is against the law, so we can't get married." Then they go on having great sex without having to suffer the horror of actually marrying the person they are fucking on a regular basis. Lucky bastards! But today, in England and Wales that all ends. Since midnight this morning it has been legal for gay couples to marry. Not just enter into a "civil partnership", but a full, proper, legally binding marriage. Now gay men and lesbian women can use the same emotional blackmail that straight people use, and coerce, trick, or even force, their lovers into the hell that is called marriage. So at last straight people can stop feeling hard done by. At last straight people can look delighted when their gay friends announce their engagement while secretly thinking "poor bastard", and they were so young too." It is the 21st century, and at last English and Welsh straight people have equality with English and Welsh gay people. Hurrah! |
