Server setup help

I just got an unmanaged server and find myself out of my depth. Anyone willing to lend me a hand getting it setup. ICQ me 292202788 if you think you help me out. I would be eternally grateful.

ocho-ocho - consider yourself warned - one more off topic post or "post for the sake of posting" & you'll be banned.

Ok....no help so far

How about a spot of bartering then?

I'll build a few freesites or galleries - or whatever you need - providing I'm able, for some help.

You probably should say what type of server it is and what it is running, what exactly you want, etc. If it is *nix and you are running (or wanting to) Apache and want some general help and pointers in setting up httpd, I can probably help a little bit in at least pointing you the right direction and solve some common problems you might run into. Maybe set up a base config for you even.

No charge or anything. Only thing is I am very busy and seldom available online so I would probably just be replying on and off from ICQ once a day or so.

Feel free to ICQ me @ 334705616 though, and I will help where and when I can.

Good luck. Hang in there.

No - you posted what you wanted to post, but seeing as it had nothing to do with helping CelticTiger with his specific problem, I edited it - just like I edited your last post.

Post on topic or go find another board.

CelticTiger - hopefully DavidM can give you a hand - sorry for all the posts in here that are distracting from you find help for your problem (and I'd offer my help, but I am far from a server kinda guy - LOL)

Thanks Dave. The server is running Linux, Redhat Fedora, cPanel 9 / WHM, Pentium IV 2.8 GHz.

My main problem is in the actual setting up of the server. I thought it'd be a bit easier than this....naturally it turns out I was wrong

I think (not sure tho) I have the nameserver setup properly with my registrar.
The servers main IP address being xx.xx.xxx.30 I used xx.xx.xxx.31 as ns1 and xx.xx.xxx.32 an ns2. This sound correct?

The the resolvers threw me again...The Primary Resolver is set at 127.0.0.1, secodary resolver as xx.xx.xxx.31 and teritary resolver as xx.xx.xxx.32 Is this correct also?

I also get the following error: rndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, this host is not authorized to connect, or the key is invalid. when I restart the DNS/Name Server (BIND) Any ideas on whats causing this?

I probably have no right managing my own server but I thought it'd be a good thing to learn and I have a month or so to get it right or I'll stay where I am at the moment, without losing alot of money.

Thanks GG and DD for keeping the spam at bay

Hmmm. What's coming up if anything in your syslog? Could be the keys are not setup [I guess this one as most likely] somewhere (what do you have in named.conf and rndc.conf - or what have you changed at all? How did you generate the keys?), might even be something simple like permissions though.

A warning on running your own nameservers: you really have to know what you are doing and keep up with security patches or security problems are inevitable. You might want to pick up "DNS and BIND" 4th ed. from O' Rielly http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dns4/ (I have the third edition myself, but it doesn't cover the newer versions). If you are going to run your own nameserver, it will be worth it's weight in gold.

Thanks a million Dave. I appreciate your input....especially about the nameservers, but I'm afraid I'm just gonna give in and just pay someone to take care of the server for me as I'm wasting so much time on it. I found a company that will manage the server for me for a monthly fee.

Thanks again for your willingness to help. Also to vangend who offered his services free of charge too.

You're welcome. Yeah, even if you got the nameserver and resolver configuration, the beast known as sendmail would have been waiting in the shadows for you. It even makes seasoned systems administrators crazy. Better to focus on what makes you money....

Good luck.

I feel your pain. I just spent the last week and a half moving servers and learning Linux server adminstration. That command line can be rather intimidating.

I don't know how stuck you are with your DS but you may want to look into a Virtual Private Server (VPS). I've been told that they are a great way to run your own server to a certain degree but still have a support team to help you incase you do something screwy.
