We had a farmer in England that converted chicken shit into gas and used that to power his car. There was quite a big court case over it as he wasn't paying fuel tax, but I think he won in the end.

What a stupid idea in face of Global Warming and too many people driving gas guzzling SUVs... Unless they find a way to factor the weight of a vehicle into the formula - then it could be fair.
The again: I can't understand the hype about hybrid cars either. In Europe thay have high fuel prices for decades, and many of their small to medium Diesel powered cars do about the same milage as a twice as expensive hybrid vehicle. It's just in other parts of the world Diesel doesn't get the same acceptance. A friend of mine in Germany drives a BMW 320 DIESEL - Jesus, what a beautiful car to drive at over 190km/h (~120 mph) on the autobahn! And you cover easily around 700-800 km with one tank of fuel...

Yes it's truly bizarre because if you own a business, and buy a "truck" heavy enough (luxury SUV for instance), you can get a tax BREAK on the cost from the government as long as you use it in the normal course of business (ie: driving checks to the bank).
wheeeeeeeeeee!

Those people are smoking crack! We should be getting tax breaks for purchasing hybrid cars. If they had a mile tax they would just screw us and wouldn't lower gas prices and we would be paying double.

But the national government subsidies gas. Every gallon of fuel you use costs the government money. So this guy is actually SAVING THE GOVERNMENT MONEY. And the state want to charge him extra for doing this ???? Seems like George W. wasn't the only retard you lot elected over there.

Don't forget that there is a really big profit margin in SUVs, and the government cannot stand the pressure from the big auto companies if something was to change that. The Japanese and others have taken a big portion of the US car market, only sales of pickup trucks and SUVs keep the majors really moving along in the US. So there it is very hard to upset that apple cart.
It's the same reason why a cash strapped federal government isn't working to put a 20-30 center per gallon gas tax in place as an income source and deterrent to buying to big SUVs. It's really too bad because your income taxes would drop significantly if that sort of tax was put in place. 250 million gallons per day = almost 28 billion dollars of tax revenue. reduce personal income taxes by a similar amount. About $100 for every man woman and child. Eliminate those who don't pay taxes currently, and you are looking about about $500-$800 per actual tax payer in tax breaks. Nobody has the nuts. :-) Alex |
