Where/how to check if an available domain name was used in the past?

Where/how to check if an available domain name was used in the past? And how can I see if it was misused by the previous owner and therefore banned by SEs? I remember Dangerdave posted this on a board, but I don't recall where and the URL he mentioned ... Thanks, guys

Dangerdave also said something about a domain name (when someone asked), that it was used in the past and banned for redirecting, or something, where/how do you see that with archive.org?

You mean http://bl.usefulscripts.com/ ? The only other thing I can think of is whois.sc, it'll tell you if the domain has been registered before anyway...

you can also just check whois history at sites like f.e. whois.sc - of course you will only see if that site was already owned but not if it was in use
