Need advice with new LL

I want to start my own LL and after reading this board and making some free sites that are accepted at most LL I submit I think I am ready. (Or maybe I am not really ready but I think the best way to learn is by doing).

Anyway, what is the best advice you would give to someone starting a new LL today, besides work, work, and work hard. Also what script would you recommend to start with until the LL starts growing. I really do not want to do it by hand, so an easy to use script that is template friendly would be ideal.

I plan on listing my own sites and some of the clean ones that some of you have available to start with and then open it for submissions. As far as categories, I think I will start with just a few and then add on as needed.
How does that sound? Any advice on categories to start with is welcomed.

All advice, suggestions, and help will be very much appreciated.

About the script: v.1 of Xpowerlinks still is a great script and has been lowered in price since they introduced v.2 of the script.

For the categories: Start with 20 or so and later on you can add more categories

Once you're comfortable with creating a hub than you can start to think about a Link List proper. Do a script search for LL scripts, both free and paid. There's been plenty of threads on the subject over the last few years.

Well, I do have a hub and it is a pain to update and ad new stuff to it, that is one reason I want to start a LL, I am hoping it will be a bit easier to maintain using a script and in the long run I hope to become profitable also.

Just earlier today I cleaned up my favorites folder with all the LLs I've submitted to over the past 2 years (100s), and, not surprisingly, quite a few of them have gone belly up. You need to be prepared for a lot of work for little pay for a long while. After having a LL for close to 2 years I dare say that I wouldn't quit my day job if I had one.

When you buy a script don't look at price. If you plan on staying in business for the long haul, the cost of the right script is negligible. I recommend taking a look at Dragon List before you make any decisions. While XPL certainly is a capable script I feel that DL is more flexible and a lot easier to customize with your own design (I own both XPL and DL).

As far as number of categories is concerned I used to agree with Fonz, but I'm starting to wonder if it's better to go for a larger number. You can always fill up the cats that don't get many submits with sponsor hosted material and just let them age and gain PR right from the get-go.

If you haven't done so already, read Preacher's thread on his experience as a fresh LL owner. Lots of good info there. Best of luck!

So I guess nobody else has any opinions or advice, well I guess I will just start out with what I know and see what happens.|confused|
