Server question

Hello All,
I want to move from virtual to dedicated hosting.
A short question about YOUR server hardware:

1) How much cpu-power, RAM and harddisk (GB, IDE/SCSI, RAID) do you have?

2) How many domains do you host on the server?

DS-2 P4 2 GHz 512 MB RAM 40 GB HD

I have a bunch of domains, not really sure exactly. I also resell hosting on this server to some mainstream sites.

All I know is no matter what I throw at the server it stays really fast and never crashes, lol.

Can't remember what a standard *nix server takes.. but I think it's somthing like 256 domains..

ram and harddrive space is the most important

RAM, HDD size and HDD speed are all very important. Make sure you get at least 7200RMP disks, go for 10K if available. Its surprising but disk access is a real big bottle neck on some servers.

hello

actually you should consider the load you're about to have on the server, and in particular if you're going to run many scripts, like TGP and that stuff with a script that you host. infact, if you don't run such scripts, there's no need to have a CPU with many GHZ, however, the most powerful server's CPU is the Xeon right now, so if you want the best, go for that.

as far as HDDs, i would never choose for my server anything that's not SCSI and i've always had SCSI equipment, they are 10k rpm and that's more than enough. latest EIDE drives had pretty good speed anyway, but for server, nothing but SCSI.

then RAM, well ram is very important, so the more you can get, the better, i have 2 GIGS and it's doing ok.

as far as domains, well there's no actual limit on that, but remember that the more domains, the more load, so the main issue would be the bandwith, so let's say that a p4 2.4 ghz can hold up to 50 mbits of bandwith without any issues, if you're going for more than that, i really suggest you to go with a Xeon as i mentioned above, or 2 separate servers aswell.

and last but not least is the operating system. our O.S. of choice is Free BSD, never had a problem, it's as stable as a rock and also very secure. but you do need a good server's admin to configure it, and eventually to re-compile the kernel. i have custom kernel on my server customized by my server's admin. don't EVER use windows 2000 server as it has too many security holes, only reason you could be using it is the ASP scripts, infact they only work on a 2k server machine or if you have a sort of emluator. so summing it up, either Free BSD or Linux.

i pretty much summed all, maybe too much, but i prefer to be clean with this stuff, as i take care of this for our company, i know the details and why we chosen something, from our past experiences.

I have a virtual account with Oxeo, the support is one of the best I ever had. Isprime and cobaltweb are great too.
I've ordered a Xeon 2.4, 1GB RAM with 36GB SCSI RAID 1 at Dynamichosting.com. The price seems good, bandwidth is fine and the prices are inexpensive.
If Oxeo or Isprime would have more cheaper prices I would choose them. I don't like it if you have to ask for a special offer.

I haven't found some bad comments about dynamichosting on the web boards.

oh my goodness, i've heard that name, was some time i didn't hear it, we were hosted with them before and let me just tell you they SUUUUUUUUUUCK BIGTIME, their support is the worst ever, so lame, i waited 3 days for a shitty root password, not to mention when we needed a bandwith raise, that took them 5 days!!! that's the worst host you can go with. if your business can wait, sure do it, but you don't want to loose precious customers and spend hours and hours figuring things out!

their prices surely sound great, but in the end, it all goes to how good support is. you pay shit, support is shit. trust me, we were with them for 1 year, at first it was good, but in the last months, when our requests increased a lot, but also the easy ones, like an ADD DOMAIN or a new mail user they were sooo slow and their sales agents weren't ever answering our requests or questions on icq.

let me just write it another time in case it wasn't clear: DON'T GO WITH DYNAMICHOSTING . . i hope i was clear enough.

Oxeo is another planet.

And as far as special offers, it's always best to ask their live support if they have a special package or something available, you never know you might get a very good deal.
