Vegas Tips and Trix
I know Vegas is a week away so there are a few things that are interesting to know:
Weather Forecast: This is the rainy season here. We get rain on a daily basis. Sometimes it's only a shower or it could be raining all day. Next week the highs will be in the low 50's and the lows in the 30's. and while some of you may never leave the Excalibur/Luxor/Mandalay bay corridor, please bring a jacket because even the halls that connect the 3 casinos are chilly. Transportation: The monorail is up and running from MGM (across from the Excalibur) to the Sahara at the top of the strip. it's 3.00 round trip or 10.00 for a day pass. 14 minutes from the top of the strip to the bottom. Cheaper and faster than a taxi but it just reopened on Xmas day and we are testing it on tourists. ![]() Las Vegas Monorail Info Tourist Traps: The Metro police have certain laws that they strictly enforce to tourists. Most carry a 48hr cooling period in Clark Co. Detention and a fine. #1 is Jay-walking. Now every state has those laws but they aren't enforced to the extent Vegas does. If you cross the street, do it in the cross walk or use the above strip crossings. #2-Identity. Make sure that you always have your ID on you. I know this seems like common sense but you'd be really surprised how many people put cash in their pocket and lock their wallet in their room. Metro and casino security are well know for making ID checks. #3-If you rent a car while here (and truthfully unless you are going to the mt. or red rock, there really is no need to, obey the traffic laws. If you make an illegal U-Turn it's a 48hr jail time and fine. You aren't excused if you are from out of town, actually they prefer to arrest tourists who are more apt to pay the fine and be gone. If you want a few bottles for your room, you can pm me and i'll get them for you. The hotels and places closest to the strip are like 2 or 3 times more than those of us who live here. Likewise with other 'recreationals' ..don't bring them on the plane. If you want to have something, wait till you get here and give me list.. i can see what i can find. *disclaimer: this is in no way an endorsement of illegal activity, just a helpful hint*. On top of Internext and AVN is the Consumer Electronics Show 6-9th. there are 2500 vendors and over 115K in attendees.. so i'd have a stamp to put your website on every dollar you spend in vegas. If you are gambling, drinks are free. If you aren't they are about $5-7 per drink. Most Taxi drivers have discount coupons to the strip clubs, so if you are going to a club, ask for a coupon. Most of all kick back, have fun, mingle and bet with your head, not over it. ![]() |

Yes for drinks you can do what my brothers do. They cash out a couple bucks and whenever they are thirsty they play the nickle slots, get the drink, and cash out. Next time they are thirsty they put another 50 cents or so in the nickle slots and cash back out after their drinks..hahaha.
Otherwise a great list of info. I know when we had our condo their, it was amazing the price differences. You go a couple blocks off the strip and things are a ton cheaper. This will be my first time staying in a hotel in vegas in years, so should be fun and I had no idea about the tram so that should make things easier as well. Good info! Andy |

Addendum: *lost my goodhead there for a second*.. If you are staying over for AVN and want to see what is cutting edge for the next few years in electronics..
It's free if you register before 12/30: CES registration They give out GROOVY stuff and, at least for me, it's really interesting to see what direction we are headed in. Andy: thats our trick as well. i usually stick 10.00 into the machine at the bar, get my drink then cash out.. or sit at a machine.. and wait till i hear COCK-tails. Since they implemented the tickets instead of money that you have to cash in.. makes it really very easy. |

One thing i forgot to mention.. ok there is probably more but my goodhead isn't working right..
The Mandalay Bay convention center is quite a distance from the Hotel itself, connected by walkways through shopping, gaming and dining areas. The Shuttle that connects the Excalibur/Luxor and Mandalay Bay stops in front of the hotels. There are people movers in between and while it is a hike (about 10 NYC blocks). The shuttle is similar to the terminal trains at large metro airports and have limited seating. |rasta| |

My personal vegas tips:
There is no sex in the champagne room. :-) Seriously, a few good tips: Vegas is a nice place, but there are some areas that are NOT so nice. If you are driving, be sure you know where you are going to. If you are not sure about if a place is "good or bad", ask any of the car hops, bell men, or hotel front line staff. If they don't know, move on and ask someone else. You will get a real opinion quick enough. Contrary to the "24 hour" mentality of Vegas, there is very little good food after about 10pm. Never allow a taxi driver to take you "down the strip" unless there is no traffic. most evenings you can walk the strip faster than they will drive, which will cost you major dollars. Every hotel, without exception has some sort of back route. Ask them to take the "locals" routes. PROSTITUION IS LEGAL ALMOST EVERYWHERE IN NEVADA EXCEPT CLARK COUNTY! There are many working girls in town, and there are many undercover cops. If you want a thrill, get a limo ride to one of the licensed houses less than an hour away. Finally, a very funny thing that most people don't know: Most of "Vegas" isn't even in Las Vegas. The strip hotels and such are NOT actually in the city. Rules are different for many things, including strip clubs. What is ok in one place will get you thrown out in another. Etc... Etc... :-) Alex |

The tram comes in near the top of picture, and the show in in the south convention center. Just one of those things... Alex |

Some tips from me: 1. Make sure you have no visible objects such as your ID sticking out of your pockets. 2. Carry lots of $1 and $2 notes on you, ie. if you catch a bus, you won't get change if you stick a $10 bill in the machine and the bus driver can't give you change either and don't ask passengers if they can break your note for you. 3. Make sure you know the telephone numbers and addresses of the local emergency services, ie. police, doctor and hospital. 4. Most of the hotel maids don't speak or understand english. Just get out of their way and let them do their job. 5. Vegas has the finest and smoothest hustlers out there. Watch out! 6. At the end of the day your feet will hurt.

When driving to Red Rock Canyon from Las Vegas driving for one hour in the wrong direction with Luna at your side helping you to navigate will add two hours to your drive there.

LMAO @ Dylan.. uh that's Flashing..
jay-walking is anytime you cross a street: 1) not in the cross walk 2) when you don't have the little walking thing. 98% of NYC would be arrested if this was enforced there. ![]() |

After reopening last week from a 3 month shutdown, the monorail is again closing. Some kind of glitch they hope can be fixed by tomorrow. Considering there are 300K people here for tonight, the strip closing at 5pm to all vehicles, i'd say that 300K better have some good walking shoes.
|rasta| oh yeah..opening containers are allowed on the strip but not glass, so make sure if you are walking about, your margarita is in plastic. Citation and fine. For outdoor fans: Mt. Charleston (the closest snow we have) has 4 new feet of snow and the boarding runs are open. |
