I realize that it is odd to start a thread by quoting someone who is not yet in the thread, but it can't be helped.

For those of you who were too busy fornicating Saturday afternoon to make it to On The Bench with the venerable host MrMaryLou, you missed out on a discussion about bookmarkers. Being that I have learned the little I know about this business by reading what the old timers post and by looking at how they build their sites, I have always taken it for granted that everyone values bookmarkers. MML said that there are those amongst you who do not want bookmarkers and that you think bookmarkers are free loaders. Well of course they are. That's the point. That's why you should want them.

Let me clarify my point by throwing darts at the wall. As you may have noticed, we are in the busisness of providing free samples to our target demographic as an enticement to make a purchase. We don't build billboards. It's not the kind of advertising in which you simply toss up an ad by itself declaring 'Buy Me'.

We are all car salespeople. Would you buy a car without test driving it first?
Think of your sites as car lots. Each thumb on a page or link to a gallery is a car just waiting to be driven off of the lot. You approach each customer and try your damnedest to sell him a shiney new car, but not everyone buys. After a customer walks away with a couple of test drives under his belt, but didn't buy, are you going to hope that he doesn't come back? Hell no! Of course you want him back. You're no idiot. As he walks away you're screaming 'Control D, damn you, Control D!'. Each time he comes back to your car lot it tells you that he likes your lot, he likes the cars you are selling. He just hasn't found the one that fits him best. But he's definately interested in upgrading. Who doesn't want newer, better, more? It's all a matter of find what fits him best. (You can discuss filtering traffic later)

Some customers come back everyday. Some, just every once in a while. You have some customers that come back so often you are beginning to think that maybe they aren't interested in buying a car. Maybe they're just lonely. Sounds like a good salesperson would be informing that poor lonely bastard about the great new dating site where he can meet babes in his area (and fuck them in the ass behind a gas station).

What about that guy who likes the fast cars? You know, the one that puts the petal to the metal on his broadband connection. I bet you could sell him a car with big downloadable movies under the hood.

How about that guy that keeps stumbling around and seems to like everything, but just can't commit to a sale? Might be time to suggest a lease option, maybe pay-per-view is his cup of tea.

Each person who comes back your lot has different needs. Are you going tell them to come back while you find new ways to meet their needs, or are you going to tell them to fuck off and go to the lot next door?

Every bookmarker is a future sale, maybe even two or three future sales. You've managed to keep them coming back, you just need to find what it takes to close the deal. Porn is like sex. (how odd) People who seek porn, are always looking for more, or for what really gets them off. Some people can be satisfied with samples for a long time, but eventually they need more.

Another dart is tossed into the air:
Free porn samples are just like that chick in high school that would go as far as making out naked, but wouldn't give you the goods. Every chance you got, you went over to her house and spent the afternoon kissing and petting and kissing and rubbing, but you always went home with blue balls and chapped lips. She was your bookmark. Would she ever give it up? No. But she was good enough to lead you to her best friend-and she was a total whore.

My highly diluted point being, bookmarkers are sales just waiting to happen. You can't possibly expect to sell every surfer every time. People who don't see the quality in bookmarkers are failing to understand the fundamental differences between adult webmasters and adult surfers. We know what's out there. We muddle through more than our fair share every day. The surfer doesn't. The surfer is being lead by his labido. It's your job to dangle the carrot in front of his labido.

This ended up as a rant/lecture. Shit.

Now tell me why some of you don't want/like bookmarkers and I will take pop shots at you and call you bad names.

I know that I rather buy something from someone that I trust.

A bookmarker has showed that he likes you and your site. He keeps coming back and the more times he comes back, the greater trust. If you just have a good sales pitch, he will be one of your customers

I fu**ing hate bookmarkers!!!!!!!!!!! but only because they make up a small percentage of my traffic... "bookmarkers are sales waiting to happen" is right on the money... as soon as they get sick of 15 or 20 set pics and decide they need more to wank to or see something they have never seen before and pop a woody... I'll gladly exchange some bandwidth for some sales
