Selling Domains info

Does a domain have to have a minimum amount of time left before expiration before it can be sold?
What are the best/safest payemt arrangements? For example: get a paypal payment , then go in and change the owner info to theirs.
I've never sold a domain before, and would appreciate any helpful info, pay safeguards etc. for a good speedy honest transaction, when I do sell mine.
I plan on posting here again when I do and possibly at Ebay ore elsewhere. Appreciate any helpful suggestions, from honest people who have done this.
I think it's fairly simple, cause I've seen people post em for sale alot.
