![]() http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0...115282,00.html Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured alive in his home town of Tikrit, according to reports. Fox News and the official Iranian news agency IRNA, has reported that the ousted leader was caught in a raid by US forces, backed by Kurdish troops. The Iraqi National Congress has also claimed Saddam is in custody. There has been no independent verification but British diplomatic sources say a suspect, believed to be Saddam Hussein, is in custody. A top Iraqi official says US administrator Paul Bremer has spoken to Iraqi leaders to tell them the news. The reports originally came from IRNA, quoting the Iraqi Kurd leader Jalal Talabani. IRNA quoted Talabani as saying: "Americans have said that the arrest will be officially announced in the next few hours." The US Defence Department is refusing to confirm the reports but a press conference has been announced for 12pm GMT. In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the US-led operation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at the press conference. It is not known who the speaker will be. Downing Street has said Tony Blair, who is spending the weekend at his country retreat Chequers, is aware of the reports. The news is spreading around Iraq rapidly and hundreds of exultant people have taken to the streets of Kirkuk and Baghdad firing weapons into the air in celebration. More follows... |
