Kids are great, Appu. You can teach them to hate the things you hate and they practically raise themselves now-a-days, you know, with the internet and all

.gif to .jpg

If I want to change a bunch of file extensions to .jpg from .gif is there any negative consequences? Simply renaming the file this way i mean. I know gif to jpg doesnt work for obvious reasons.

If you're changing the file extension strictly for web use, it will probably function properly in over 90% of browsers. The MIME type for both JPG and GIF files is the same. Just be aware that there may be a few users out there that get a broken image.

A better solution is to convert and reupload the image.

I use the Mac version of this but you really need to be sure that files with the jpg extension are really jpegs.

I run a batch job in photoshop. Record what you want it to do, save the record and then batch the whole directory. Takes about 5 mins to do the record, once you have it, you have it. After you have the whole process is rather fast pending on the amount of files.

Thanks for your advice folks, guess I'll have to leave them as is. I have thousands of images spread over hundreds of folders and sub folders so batch converting them isnt really an option for me unfortunately. And its important webamsters are able to view the images, and knowing a lot of you use macs..

And thanks very much for that link Cleo, that software is helping me out big time!

A photoshop batch isn't difficult. Dreamweaver can do a batch find and replace for your code.

Rather than just rewriting the extension, an extra ten minutes of work could give you much better results?

Cleo, nice tool. I was meaning to find something like that.
