NCAA Football game clock rule changes

According to Rule 3-2-5, the game clock will start as soon as the ball is kicked in a kickoff situation. Previously, the clock would only start once the receiving team touched the ball. In addition, Rule 3-2-5-e states that, after a team gets a first down, the clock will begin running again on the ready-for-play signal. Previously, the clock did not resume until the team snapped the ball.

Penn State coach Joe Paterno brought out another perhaps unintended effect of the new rule.

"When you kick the ball, [the clock] starts. Kick it out of bounds with 8-10 seconds to go, the game's over," Paterno said to USA Today. "We've got to expose our kids to it in preseason practice."

Total fucking BS... This is beyond stupid, drama makes games great, and taking away a chance to snap the ball when down 4 with :01 left on the 10 yard line fucking kills it, this is the worst thing they could have done.

What were they trying to fix? I didn't even know it was broken?

Makes you wonder why in the world this rule change ever was even considered....odd.

Well, with the first down rule, I imagine that, as usual, they are trying to make the games shorter. ( I would mention that it also brings it closer to the pro rules, but they don't really care about that )

I guess it never occured to them to get rid of a TV timeout..... or 10..... instead of some of the classic finishes helped by the old rule.

The kickoff rule, I really don't get. It'll save little time, and only have a real effect once in a blue moon, at the end of halfs in close games.

Just sit back and think of all the games that are considered the all time greats that would not have ended as they did if this rule was in effect then.

I do like the replay rule so that was a good move, but the game clock changes are just insane.

I really don't see what the big deal is. There will still be "amazing endings" to games. It doesn't unfairly effect one team over the other. And, like was said, it brings the game closer to a pro level as far as rules go. There is still the chance to snap the ball when down 4 with :01 left on the 10 yard line. It won't be because of a 1st down "timeout", but because of good game management.
