One further update re: LATE PICKS

A question was raised in the pool's message forum...
Quote:
Personaly i think once you make your picks that should be it. You have a whole week to make them.I think that no one should be able to change them once the deadline is closed.Just my opinion
My response:
Quote:
No one changed their picks. If you miss the early game (or games) you forfeit those games and those points, but you can still get your picks in for the regular Sunday games and MNF, but you must send your picks via email to the admin BEFORE THE START OF SUNDAY'S GAMES. That option has always been in place. Again, no one's picks are ever altered after the games begin.
I hope this clears up any misconceptions but if there's still questions post them here.

And good luck in week 11, picks are ready to be made now.

I've been in this since it started & I had no idea that could be done.

There's a shitload of people on this board that fucked up & missed the 1st game of the season because it was on a Thursday & this info was never brought up?

Where's it posted on Pool Host? (other than the message board by you yesterday?)

My only regret in week 10 was the 49'ers not making that game-winning TD in the last few seconds of MNF. They should have either ran Gore or passed it in. I have no idea why they gave the ball to that other guy on that play.

Oh well.

Week 11's games look crazy, crazy spreads and tough matchups to call. It never gets easier.

The 4 that were added in after the deadline should have never been allowed.

Sorry for taking so long to get back here. It's been quite a week.

Yes, people are strongly urged to get their picks in before the early games deadline. However, when anyone who missed the early game (or games) wants to get their picks in for the remaining unplayed games they have always been able to do so (with penalty), and I have posted on various boards to that effect in the past.

Someone recently suggested that people should have to forfeit their top weight as well as lose out on the games they missed, and I agree with that. Up until now I have just been hitting the random button to generate the weights for the missed games.

Anyway, sorry for any confusion or controversy. Rest assured there's no favoritism going on, if the picks don't make it to the admin email before the allotted time the person loses out, period. But the option to get remaining picks in after missing the early game has always been in place.

I have several times in the past posted about this. In the 4 years I've been running this, and in all the years of me participating in this as well as the other pools such as the JBM one, even the GFY one from back around 2002, people have always been able to at least get the remainder of their picks entered when they missed early games.

Btw, a lot of people don't seem to get the update emails the pool sends out. This may be due to them having an old outdated email address in their pool profile, or they don't have the "accept updates from admin" option checked. I've had at least two people ICQ me about it so far this year saying they didn't get the emails, and when I had them log into their user info they found the problem --- a no longer working email address.

Thoughts? Suggestions? The main intention here is for this to be an extremely fun pool for everyone, and definitely my main role in all this is to see that it is.

Maybe these rules that are scattered around on various boards should be posted or linked to from the pool site?

Or maybe the word "must" can be changed to the word "should" in your posts & reminders?

One of the late pickers is in 10th place - what happens if they make it into the top 3 at the end of the year? 4th place looses money because they got their picks in on time?

I don't really care anymore - I'm not making anymore picks.

To be fair I must point out that a "late picks" notification is posted every year on the main page of poolhost --

"11/06/2008
ATTENTION: Forgot to Pick?
If your pool includes Thursday games and you forgot to enter your picks, then CONTACT YOUR POOL ADMIN!"

I've always figured that was good enough notification.

I will change the wording of that part of the post, sure.

If he can do it in spite of the penalties he's incurred for missed games then I'd say he deserves it. I've always levied a penalty to those who miss early game deadlines but who still make the effort to get their picks in, as do other pools as I said. I realize people make mistakes, forget sometimes, slip up, don't read the board updates always, etc etc, so I try and accomodate where possible. Like I said, my main thing is trying to make this pool as fun as can be. Some think it's not fair they should miss out on an entire week because of one early game, while others think that's the way it should be, and still others think there should be no early games in the pool. Hard to please everyone, if not impossible, so I've set the rules for the pool a certain way and have stuck to that, always.

I'm sorry to hear that, I was hoping all concerned could have discussion about this without anyone getting too upset. After 4 years there was bound to be someone somewhere who raises an objection.

Again, up until now the topic hasn't come up. As always I try my best to keep things running smoothly and fairly, and I'm prepared to do what it takes to see that that happens. All along I've just gone with the thinking that if you miss the early game week deadline the onus is on the player to log into the pool and email the admin, the onus is not on myself to notify them to do so.

Would everyone prefer if there were no more early game weeks? I only hesitate in doing that because the idea is to have MORE football, not less

Just for the resord, this topic did come up before - these were posted on Sept 10 2008 in the Week 1 thread by people that forgot about the Thursday game:

Yes, absolutely... and in those weeks anyone who sent their picks to the admin email before Sunday's games commenced got the remainder of their picks entered and was penalized for the games they missed. I'm sorry if I missed some people's posts, it's difficult to stay on top of every post in every thread on every board. However, the option has always been available, and I have posted about it in past years and this year in reply to such posts.

Again I'll ask, would it be better to just eliminate thursday games from the pool all together?

Maybe I should put up a poll about it in the pool.

GG I don't want bad feelings about this. I sense you are more miffed than I first thought you were. In all honesty I posted about it because one person raised the subject and I thought it might be a good idea to talk about it. I'm rather surprised it has raised anyone's hackles this much.

That week I missed the Thursday game because I was so sick midweek and I was not about to ask anyone to add my picks after the deadline, simply because I don't like the idea.

In the past three years, I have been in 6 other pools (away from adult biz), and I also run 2 of my own every year. I respect the deadline and do not allow any late picks, I have made that clear and not a single person in my pools has had any objections. The other 6 that I am in has the same rule. You miss the Thursday game, you miss the week.

The late picks usually don't effect me in any way, because I always suck

The problem is that, once you involve money and/or prizes, it can no longer be thought of as "fun" It's not a "for fun" pool. Pussy Cash is giving away cash, which means there should be rules.

I've been in a couple of pools on Pool Host and each had different rules. Based on that, why would I read what their admin says? I go by what you posted the week before the season started:
Quote:

And even if I did read that Pool Host post:
Quote:
11/06/2008
ATTENTION: Forgot to Pick?
If your pool includes Thursday games and you forgot to enter your picks, then CONTACT YOUR POOL ADMIN! The pool admin can enter picks for you if they choose.
It says that you can enter them if you choose. Why would anyone think that you would do that based on your posts that "ALL picks must be in before that game"?

As far as your poll, it's your contest, so you make the rules. All I'm saying is that you have 2 sets of rules posted in various places & it should have been decided & posted before the season started as to which ones were the official rules.

I understand that you're in a tough place now because of this, but you can't expect to say 2 different things & then not catch shit about it.

Which there are. (rules)

I do see your point though. I'm hoping you also see mine. For one, there are rules, always have been. Also policies, and one of those policies which I've had from the beginning was modelled after other webmaster pools I've participated in, that being that although it's not widely blasted around everywhere, if you miss an early games week deadline you can still get the rest of your picks in as long as you submit them to the admin before the Sunday games start, and you lose any points from the early games you missed.

That right there is what keeps the pool's integrity intact... that every pick entered was made before the start of the games, doesn't matter if it's thursday or sunday. The JBM pool doesn't blast this policy around all over either but I'm quite certain that people have contacted their admin and gotten their picks put in during early game weeks. I've seen them post about it to that effect.

As well, yes there is money being given as prizes, BUT... there is no entrance fee, something worth pointing out if the "fun" factor is to be argued. Prizes aside, one of the biggest factors of importance is that the pool be fun for people.

As I said I was attempting to strongly urge all players to get their picks in on time rather than become lax about it. I don't mind manually entering the picks of a few who missed the early game and wanted to get the rest of theirs in, but to do so for dozens or 40 or 50 people is another matter. Do you see where I'm coming from?

No, not two sets of rules. One set of rules that have always been in place. I just haven't made this one policy so openly and widely known, for the reason stated above. I am here now trying to correct any error that may have been made, thus the poll.

To be honest GG, there has only been one other person who has raised this issue with me (other than Twiceshy, who has indicated that the matter for her is now settled). That person posted on the GFY board and was the one who suggested that people who miss the early game deadline must also forfiet their top weight as penalty for it. I agreed with that suggestion and will do it that way from now on. He seemed placated by that, so unless there are others who are for some reason remaining silent on the subject that just leaves yourself. The thing is I want everyone happy, so even if just one person is disgruntled about something I'm going to definitely listen and try to find out if anything can be done to make things right, or at least better.

Let's give that poll a week or so, and see what happens. Deal?

Again, we're not talking about a ton of people here, only a very small handful have missed early games and submitted the rest of their picks. I think last year it happened maybe two or three times. This year so far it's been maybe five. And ALL of their remaining picks were made prior to the start of the Sunday games... which is key. Remember, I'm also a player in the pool too. I don't want anyone getting unfair advantage over me or my picks either. But niether do I want to come off as some kind of hardass when someone forgets about an early game.

Please consider everything I've said as a whole before replying. And as always thank you for the input.
