It may not have been so much as an actual drop in the number of American internet users as an expansion on the population demographics surveyed: there were slightly less American adults connected to the Internet last year than the previous year.
While the results are hardly surprising, it makes one consider what wasn't published in the survey: What were those people doing? What does the average American internet user use his or her connection for? Which services do they use and how often? I wouldn't have much use for the information myself (except to extend conversation among tipsy friends), but it would be cool to find out just how many Americans download porn daily.
