Question Gonzales pulls out the big "T" word for ISP snooping

"Alberto Gonzales has said that requiring Internet service providers to save records of their customers' online activities is necessary in the fight against terrorism".
http://news.com.com/Terrorism+invoke...?tag=nefd.lede

Funny how a couple of weeks ago, the need for the snooping was for C* P_.
"Gonzales' earlier position had only emphasized how mandatory data retention would help thwart child exploitation. "

It makes no difference what it's for, unless there is a warrant for a specific user, it's a violation of the 4th Amendment.

Comrades, this is best for the party.

Hasn't Dubya already stated that businesses are not record keepers?

Same old same old. Liberties being undermined and eradicated in favor of non existent security.

On that same note, if hillary become president, she'll make bush look like paul revere.|shocking|

Many of you are well enough off that the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.
- Hillary Clinton

|stfu|

Although being the optimist, I think one good thing may come if she were president, a new bioethics counsel to get rid of leon kass.

So we can FINALLY start pushing forward with cutting edge stem cell and genetic therapy research

This is actually one of my personal soapbox issues. Everytime we allow the government to infringe on one of our personal freedoms...for the good of society, it actually becomes easier the next time for them to do the same and their appetite only becomes greater with each small piece.

With the terrorist paranoia to bolster them, it should be of no surprise that they would push to take even more personal freedoms for the greater good. The sad thing is, there are plenty of people who will believe that 1) it is for the greater good and 2) it won't be abused by those in power and that therefore, this is not a bad thing.

Something to think about regarding our government is Historically it only takes from the people and never gives anything back in regards to their legislation. No matter how "temporary" they say it will be.

Which is why we should all support "sunset legislation"

And today on the CNN Cafferty report they were discussing how certain pieces of voting regulations appear to be targetting groups that don't agree with the current parties in power.

What concerns me about this type of information is that they had more then enough information pointing to 2 of the terrorists involved with 9/11, had already confirmed the threat of planes being used as weapons and had data pointing to the targets yet the intelligence community under Dubya ignored all of it.

This type of information is worthless in tracking terrorists. It is very useful in tracking who political opponents are talking to, tracking sources of information used by reporters and of course gathering insider financial information.

This has nothing to do with protecting children, stopping terrorism or helping the citizens of the USA. It is all about keeping the party in power.

Yeah caught that too. Sometimes I wonder why im more afraid of our government than I am of terrorists. And then its little blurbs lost in all the "news" that reminds me.

Add the push for ISP's and search engines to keep records for 2 years of all their users seems like we will make the soviets look like amateurs when it comes to monitoring the people.

There has not been privacy on the internet since public places were opened up for fbi surveillance anyway. Internet is considered a public place, never private. Not at all private, not even a little. These people suck no doubt. But this is nothing new other than asking private companies to save the information.

Well, I'd say move to Canada, but the truth is that most Americans would not be able to function in such a liberal society!

Yes but the "Dark Side" is that Dubya didn't win the first election, still took office and even after 4 years of major fuck ups Americans did elect him for a 2nd term. We can only hope people educate themselves.

I wish.

The "education" of the massess will occur as a result of their willingness to embrace truth and shun the trivial, even if that means excorcising the "demons" of false hope and the ever popular "faith", which aside from religion is classified as lunacy, and rightly so.

Reason and logic dictate the laws and machinations of the universe, but not the minds of men. Once they do, the world will be a VERY diferent place than it currently is, virtually unrecognizable.

It doesn't matter to the Dems, either, alas. Clinton did more to expand search & seizure laws than anyone before him, and I'd rather watch my toenails grow than wait for any congressional Democrats to actually come out against this.

Great to know.

The thing that gets me when they say shit like this is, do they every consider the logistics of storing that would be? There is no way that any ISP would have enough storage to even comply with such a ruling. Get a clue Gonzales. I'd just like to him for thinking this stuff up.

I think it's quite deliberate. Rather than go after online porn through obscenity prosecutions (which are always a chancy thing to do - juries are unpredictable), they use the "regulatory" route. In either case the goal is to drive as much (US) porn out of business so they can tell their religious right nutballs they "did something about porn."

Of course, the East Europeans and (increasingly) Asians get to move into the gap. And there certainly won't be the pretty decent self-regulation that most legit US sponsors and webmasters adhere to, since, like drugs, the production and wholesale distribution will all be free of US jurisdiction, while the largest body of consumers/buyers remains the USA.

The same folks that bought us the War on Drugs, the War on Terror, and the Katrina Rescue are gonna forcibly wean the poor besieged US public from its porn habit? Yeah, right.
