Tips for newbies
Just things I wish I knew back in 2001.
Slow and steady often wins the race. Case 1: 1,000 hits * 3 days = 3,000 100 hits * 4 days = 400 15 hits * 7 days = 105 2 hits * 351 days = 702 Total hits = 4,207 hits first year Case 2: 50 hits * 365 days = 18,250 hits first year Which would you rather have in general? Lesson: Don't neglect sources that send constant and steady hits, even if they do not give you as much of a initial boost as other traffic sources. |

Part 2:
Doing one such thing per day of the above for one year. #1: 4,207 * 365 = 1,500,000 hits (apr) (125,000 hits per month, 4,166 hits per day) #2: 18,250 * 365 = 6,600,000 hits (apr) (550,000 hits per month, 18,333 hits per day) See the difference yet? And this is only taking into account the difference with the traffic in the course of a year. This tip is really golden. If you don't understand it, read it again or bookmark it and try later. It is something you really want to be aware of if you are in this for the long term. |

Blog Tip: (Blog Directiries)
Blogs are a little different than freesites. With blogs the surfers are more apt to return to your pages if you run a good blog more so than an individual freesite. So unless you have a splog or do not update regularly chances are that even a recip on the side of your blog will send 10-50+ hits a day to the directories as time goes on and you build traffic. With this in mind pay attention to what they send back to you over time after you submit a few blogs. You might find that many do not even send you five hits a day. Weigh carefully whether it is worth it to you to give them this space. Perhaps there are better sources out there - you could always send to a toplist or instead trade links with others who will send mroe hits to you. You don't have to be listed in every single blog directory known to man and the recips can clutter up your blog. Sure many of the directories have high PR and this is something to consider, but then again if they only send you two hits a day and you send them 50 is this worth it to you? In order to see what is sent out to you over time, I like Google Analytics. (In google analytics: click "Visitor Segment Performance" then "Referring Source". Now hit the arrow in the red button near each entry to see what is sent per day to you) But I understand some other local server-side stats programs can be just as detailed too. I'm not going to list the ones that send me a fair amount of hits as that willlikely vary for you. But experiment and pay attention to it, that is my advice. ![]() |
