Linspire OS?
Anyone ever try this? It used to be called Lindows. I am gonna try it on a seperate PC to see how it runs/works. Its supposed to be descent just wondering if anyone here has ever used it and if they liked it. My concern is my attachment to windows apps, but we will see how it goes. I can always install an emulator or something I guess.
I really wanted to get a mac last laptop I bought but all my programs are windows based and didnt want to have to re-purchase them all so I am wondering if this is a viable alternative to removing windows from my computers. |

Walmart is selling cheap boxes with this loaded.
If I was going to give Linux a try I would go with http://kde.org/ The one problem with Linux is it doesn't run Adobe apps which for me was a deal breaker so I went with that other *nix OS from Apple. |

I have had Linux run adobe apps in the past I just had to use emulators I believe but I do remember running photoshop on linux, or maybe it was freebsd but it was definitely with an emulator of some sort. At least from my experience with my little iMac here, Max OSx is nothing but a tweaked version of FreeBSD with KDE running. Of course it runs a lot smoother than a standard FreeBSD install. |

You are right KDE is just a window manager for whatever flavor of *nix you use.
Mac OS X is basically FreeBSD. http://www.apple.com/macosx/architecture/ I don't use Linux myself so I only know what I read. Wine will let you run many Windows programs, this is how Disney runs Adobe apps on their Linux boxes. |

Check out this site for Linux Distros (click on the distro list on the right for reviews and info about each).
Mandrake is a pretty popular distrobution these days... free to download and easy to setup. I don't know anyone whose tried the Linspire/Lindows distro, but it IS built on top of the Debian distro and I guess made to look more like Windows.. (and not free) here's a pretty good review of Linspire. Whichever you choose, you should be able to run the standard apps like OpenOffice, Gimp and do anything you could do in Windows (except run certain games). If you want to run Windows apps, you'll still need an emulator, and these are known to be far from perfect. Good luck. |worm |

Well I paid for Lindows and to be quite honest was not satisfied what so ever so I went around and tried a couple other distros like Mandrake 10 Official and Suse 9.1 Personal.
I can say that SuSE has their act together and their OS looks kick ass. For those of you who have PC's are tired of viruses and have always wanted something like MacOS, take a look at SuSE. They are owned by Novell and their distro is killer, clean and runs well. Their YaST system management utility is killer and works just like a lot of the windows stuff. I havnt tried any of the windows emulators on it yet, but its flying on my compaq 2.4 ghz laptop. If you are still learly to get rid of your windows, it configures for dual boot and will actually partition the drive itself on install if you leave the defaults and you can setup a dual boot windows/linux box if you want to test it out. I am just trying to tweak my fonts a tad but everything is running great .. just have to get a few apps moved over and I'm sticking with it I think ![]() -Andy |

Looks very nice, KDE is the desktop
![]() http://www.suse.com/us/private/produ...ers/index.html SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal Easy installation for all – even alongside Windows A convincing application for every task – without any license fees A clear-cut user interface – easy to understand for all who are familiar with Windows Virus-proof Internet connection – without any (expensive) additional software Only US $ 29.95 I may have to dust off my old PC. |

Yes it uses KDE and has one of the coolest looks of all the linux distros. They definitely did a nice job putting it together. I think with SuSE and crossover office from www.codeweavers.com I will be able to migrate completely to linux including my windows apps. Either that or I might try win4lin to see how that works. EDIT: Here is the direct download link for those interested. http://www.suse.com/us/private/downl...l_iso_int.html Just download the ISO and burn to a cd. Andy |

Oh no Mr. Bill
![]() Maybe we need to start a charity drive to help the soon to be financially challenged Mr. Bill. Let me start this charity drive by donating a few thousand worms that seem to have found their way into my mail program. I'm downloading the disk image now but I'm not sure if I will be able to burn it from my Mac and my PC does not have a CD burning or a FireWire port to plug in the external CD burning that I also own so I may just order the CD. |
