I've found that by ripping out my kitchen and going kitchenless while doing grueling home remodelling seems to work very well for losing weight.

Other then that I've been going to the gym for five years regularly now but it wasn't until about a year and a half that I really started noticing a lot of results. In fact the first year I actually put on weight.

i was on the "CCDC" diet and lost 33 lbs in 78 days. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone.. and quite frankly i'd rather of had the poundage.

Extreme Nate I know just what you mean man but there might be some things your doing wrong with your work out. If your already a big guy weight training is not the thing for you to be doing if thats what your doing. You will only get bulky like I did. Cardio work outs are where its at bro. You need to pick 10 work out exercises and do them 4 times a week 2 sets a peace to start off if you havnt been working out long. The key to cardio work outs is not rushing. The slower you are the longer you have to hold it and the more you burn. One of my favorites that gets me goin is holding a 5 - 10 pound weight in my hands holding my arms out and squat. Hold that for 10 - 15 minutes and you will notice that your driping with sweat. Then that will burn your arms out when you start so then you go onto your legs and do another one of the other 10 exercise. It should take you like an hour and a half to do all the workouts. I have lost 35 pounds this way so far. Although I am still a big guy im not as big as I was. When you feel your down to your target weight then you go on to weight trainning starting with light weights because light weights tone your body. Now eating is a whole other thing. If you dont eat right none of this will work. You dont have to not eat or enjoy yourself you just have to cut back. Instead of getting seconds dont Instead of eating bread with your meal dont. Also drink lots of water while working out because its easier to burn off water than it is fat. Over all I would say thats about it but I would suggest not working out alone. You get more motivated when someone else is there to push you. Yes I know it was a long reply but hey you asked

Just keep at it - most of the time, you're loosing fat & gaining muscle when you work out, so the scale may not show that you're making progress, but you are.

I lost 25 lbs from May til July & while I was eating & working out the same, the weight stayed basicaly the same, so I go discouraged & basically slacked off for Sept & Oct.

But I'm back on it now (just started last week) and I'm hoping to at least drop my gut before Vegas

This does remind me that I need to get my fat ass on the tread mill very soon

You're going about it all wrong. If you want to loose wait you need to smoke at least a pack a day. I always weigh much less when I'm smoking then when I'm not

Define 'working out'.

As a big guy you have some benefit that when you initially started you potentially could have lost more fat and gained more muscle than most people.

This newbie miracle exists within the first couple months you start- only.

After that you must pick:

1) To lose body weight
2) To gain muscle

I'd pick to gain muscle for a few months which will also mean gaining some fat.

If you nail the nutrition just right you can minimize the amount of fat, but really it would be slow going that way.

Don't go by weight- go by how your clothes fits. Muscle is much more dense than fat. At the same weight (185) I've been both out of shape with a lot of fat and size 36 pants and 16 1/2 inch shirts and while lean I'm a 34 waist and 15.5 inch shirt size.

Same weight...different body composition.

Go here and read:

http://www.timinvermont.com/fitness/faq15.htm

And this may help as well:

http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/

Though the above site is more for 'advanced' strength trainers it has some good basics too.

No matter how complex people can tend to make things it's still a matter of whether calories taken in exceed your calories spent.

Generally, a loss of more than 2lbs per week means you are also losing muscle.

Everyone's body and hormone levels are different though..it's one of those rules of thumb.

Hey Nate,

Speaking as someone with a similar problem, let me suggest this:

If you're lifting weights, notch back on the weight and increase your reps. Lighter weight with more reps will give you tone not mass. Since you're a big guy, you want to tone up and lost some of the fat that keeps you from looking defined. It's easy to build muscle mass, keep your weight the same, and not see much difference in the mirror.

If you're not already doing it, add some cardio like walking/bike riding/calisthenics. If you're already doing some, do some more.

Drink TONS of water. You'll piss all day long but it will help flush your system out.

Eat 5 or 6 times a day, but "snack" size meals. This will keep your metabolism running efficiently and keep you from putting on new fat.

HTH

Max
