I fear you all will hate me with all the questions I have lol. I have heard the term on here 404 shaving and from what I gather its a bad thing. What does that mean? I have my 404 set up to go to a site I dont submit anywhere and keep up as a possibly future hub with clickcash links to some cam friends of mine. Is that the wrong thing to do?

404 traffic should not be redirected anywhere. let it be either an FPA or the list of Your galleries or just a banner. And You'd better use "The page was not found on the server" text or smth like that so that a surfer knew how he got there

A 404 error means that the page you are linking to does not exist.

i think a good portion of 404 errors I get are from people trying to see if I have any open directories. I read somewhere ( I think here) that it was good to utilize that traffic should they happen find themself somewhere they are not supposed to be.

404 is shit traffic, especially if it is a few bastards trying to find unproteced image directories so they can hotlink or otherwise exploit your files. You can add IndexIgnore * to your htaccess file so no one will be able to route around in directories that do not contain an index. That's your best bet.

If they know how to look for open directories.. what do you think the chances of selling to them is?? I would say it is close to non-existant.

- Protect your dirs - your server should be setup to do that

- Have a nice 404 page that says the link is not found and offers them an option back to your front page or to a sponsor

- Get back to work
