Free Hosts??

Hi, I'm a little confused on this one. I notice a lot of sponsors offer Free Hosting. How can this be of help to a WM as most all link list frown on them. How can you promote them or is that what the sponsor does for you?

I asked this at another board but didn't get enough info. to figure out how it could help me at all. So I thought I'd try it here....Thanks!

Sponsors offer hosting to their affiliates to eliminate bandwidth cost concerns as a factor for the affiliates promoting their program. This can be a huge issue, especially if they have movie galleries. But as you say, many Link Lists and a growing number of TGP's are refusing to list sponsor hosted sites and galleries.

This was also put forward as a way around 2257, but as I see it the affiliate is still the publisher even if the sponsor is hosting.

Some links sites don't care (but most do).

Many TGPs's really don't care. Some people use a combination of freehosts and monster autosubmitters to drive traffic, which is only functional because they are not paying for bandwidth, otherwise the margins wouldn't work.

With the new 2257 rules, some sponsors have moved to cancel sponsor content EXCEPT if it is used on their free host. A number of sponsors have recently opened this type of free host sort of the try to fill a void and to try to not lose so much traffic (and the word out there is that some of the sponsors that pulled their sponsor content are hurting).

The current 2257 regulations make free hosts a pretty risky situation, I don't think there is any legal precident out there that gets the domain holder out of being responsible for the content on their domain. In fact, there are lawsuits out there suing companies like yahoo for things posted in user groups and such, which is a form of free host.

We'll have to see how that turns out.

Thanks for that info. I guess I'll just bypass a freehost then. At least I know now why they are showing up at a lot of my sponsors.
