Choosing a Linklist script

Hi all, sometime in the next year I plan on purchasing a linklist script so i dont have to update my list by hand anymore.

So as I look through all the recommendations on this board I think Im comming up with more quaestions than answers.

So maybe you all can help me answer a few questions

How hard is it to change scripts once one script is already there? Is it a super pain to change everything over from one script to another?

I guess I ask this because my instinct is to go with a less expensive script and give it a run for awhile see what can be done what cannot be done, what works and what doesnt etc....but as I think more about it maybe its best to start out with the script Im going to stay with for the long haul.

Which is a hard decision to make since you have to buy too try..

So if anyone has any input on this or just on choosing a linklist script in general let me know what you think.

Thanks and Cheers

Changing a script is sometimes easy and sometimes a nightmare, depending on what you're changing from and to. If you get something from a company with a scalable script (i.e. several versions, from cheaper to more expensive) it's usually a lot less hassle than changing scripts to upgrade to a more powerful version from the same company.

Since the X Power Links team has just admitted that there will probably never be an update to the script I will no longer recommend that to anyone, but I'm working on something for myself since they've dropped the ball. If you're not in too much of a hurry (i.e. you can wait 6 or 8 months) I'll be releasing the "Lite" version of my script, and I assure you that upgrading from one version to the more robust versions will be painless. If you're in a hurry, I believe Gossamer Threads is well liked by many and there are several versions of that at different price points

There are a few scripts with free trials, and most have online demos. I don't know how difficult it is to move from one script to another, but I think it's a bad choice to go with one merely based on cost. Get the one with the features you want. The most expensive scripts are about $400 I believe. As a business investement for the long term that's not a whole lot.

Wow, that's news to me. Will they continue to provide support or are they going out of business altogether?

They seem to still be providing support, but many users (including myself) are pretty pissed that we've been getting strung along about an upcoming "update", some of us for over a year.

According to what they told one user (who is a member here but may or may not decide to jump in this thread and raise their hand ), they're just too busy and XPL is their "lowest priority". Which is fine, but it would be nice if they would have let us know that 6 months ago instead of stringing people along.

XPL is an OK script which I've said many good things about, but since it will not be getting updated I have pulled all my links to it and I no longer recommend it.

Thanks for the replies. Lemmy you hit the nail right on the head. I dont want to have to upgrade or change later, so your right to get the script I want and look at it as an investement.

Madmax Im looking for sometime in maybe early next year or late this year so Ill keep any eye out for what your working on.

Thanks for the replies and help

I would suggest taking a look at http://www.wsnlinks.com . Nice script with lots of features. I think with the new upgrade you can import links into it. Not sure yet on that. We haven't changed to the new version yet. I would highly recommend wsnlinks. Great support and very flexible and customizable script plus you can use it on 3 domains not just one. Reasonably priced too I think it's $50 bucks but well worth it.

Gary, does the site in your sig run on WSN? That was one of the scripts I considered before deciding on XPL.

I'm on XPL and I'm pretty much happy with how the script runs right now . However I haven't used it for long periods of time and I guess issues may arise - but right now I totally love it

But if it's not going to get updated then I wouldn't recommend it to anyone - you might as well wait for what MadMax is cooking on as I'm sure that's gonna be a real quality product.

I'm using WSN for the list I'm building. It does have a ton of features and the admin is pretty straightforward. But I am LOST on customizing the damn templates....It's my own ignorance about PHP, I'm sure.

It's a good script though - can't believe they don't charge more for it. Lemmy, I believe they have a free demo for download if you want to play around with it

Lemmy,
Yes it does. We have customized to our liking tho. That's one thing very nice about the script.

Hello everyone im JoeBlack the owner of Porn-Ranch.Com . I am also the one that past the information over to MadMax that I recieved from an email I sent them. They basically said that there other projects are more important than the link list script so they will no longer be updating it. Among other things they said they wont even do paid customized work so I wouldnt recommend them to anyone do to this recent reply. I was one of the first and biggest supporters of this script but I will no longer talk in there name.

I have been waiting for over a year for the update so me and my partner can start our new link list scripts and make some changes to my current link list so I am upset at the way they handled things.

The script itself is good but the update features is one the main purposes for buying a script so I wouldnt suggest it.

I myself am now looking at Gossamer Threads but its a little pricey so I will look a little more. I am looking forward to MadMax's script which im sure will be a really great peace of work. I look forward to being one of the first people to buy it when it is released if not for my new link list than the one after it.

Sorry to pass the bad news for those who didnt know, but its better to know than to not know.

If you have any questions on the details let me know.

JoeBlack

In retrospect, I would go with a script solely designed for the adult market.

You might run into problems like outgrowing the script if you go with a cheap/free script.

Any way you look at it you won't ever find a script that does everything you want in the way you want when you want, unless you get some custom coding done(or write your own), and that is, or could be, a costly arragement.

Is there anyway to make the script use the actual free site URLs or do you have to keep it the way it is now? ex: yourdomain.com/links/link# Other than that, it looks like a hell of a script, especially for the money.

Useless Warrior,
Yes you can, you just have to change the setting in the admin to not count clicks. We have it counting clicks on links so you get the yourdomain.com/links/link# then it will go straight to the url instead.

If anyone needs help with or have anymore questions regarding wsnlinks feel free to contact me on icq #292194974.

You know....I was just about to buy the XPL script then read this thread...I should have known something was up when I didn't see much change in their site info. I can't count how many scripts I've looked into over the past year. Right now I am using infowizards, but to be honest, I am not a fan of it. I thought about the Gossamer Threads one, but they still can't convince me why they need to charge so much.

As for the WSNlinks posted here....I have not seen any adult link directories or LL's with this, nor mainstream sites. However, after reading it through, I have to say it does a shite load of stuff and for the price, it makes me wonder why they only charge $60 for it.

It's become very hard for peeps to find a good quality script but one with good support and track record. As it has been said before, changing scripts in the middle of business and already having your category pages indexed will create such a huge nightmare and job to change over. Lots of 404's happening

I wish I had the time to make my own actually....to be honest, if I thought I could make one and sell it, I'd would do it. I already know what I would do with it and know other webmasters would use it too.

Well when we bought wsnlinks a while ago we paid $20 for it and think the version was like 2.0 or something like that. Paul the guy that owns the script does great support. Any problems or questions I have had about the script he has fixed and answered. The script does a lot and yes it is cheap. Why they don't charge more is beyond me. Netgoonie very valid point about making one yourself but like you said if you had the time, that's the key. A lot of webmasters don't have the time to do it. I am not affiliated with wsnlinks. I am just a satisfied customer and people was wondering about link list scripts that are out there and I figured what the hell I will tell them about wsnlinks. I am very happy with the script and we are not using it to it's full capabilitites. There is so much you could do with it, it's unbelievable, especially for the price.

I bought wsnlinks last night, and I have to agree its a very powerful script. It was very easy to install even after I had drank a few glasses of wine I will be working on it over the next few days to make it "pretty"

Gnus -

this is interesting, I have been putting off buying a script because of the cost -I've been waiting until a little more $$ rolls in

but I'm now considering this script - the option to purchase a yearly licence is a nice incentive for me to try it without too much pain

I just want to know, when you say fully customizable, does that mean that I can set it up to look exactly like it does now, in terms of layout? and will it affect my current PR ranking on the pages? (I read the post from UW & will make the changes for the urls & whatnot)

seems like the perfect solution for a noob with ambition but not a lot of cash, thanks for the link (if there's any referral in it for you let me know )

Thanks,
Ponygirl

I know for myself I am possibly looking at it, but also came across another that I am conisdering that I feel competes very well with gossamer's links SQL...its a commercial level script "powerseek SQL" www.focalmedia.net ....I found out they will be releasing their v.3 in a couple months. But....still have not ruled out wsn...among in-link as the other possibility.
