iPod Help?

Ok, I have a conundum…maybe somebody can help. I had an old 40 gig iPod that served me long and well. It had about 7000 songs on it…everything from Slayer to Spice Girls. I was over in the Prague and I thing the Euro power fried it because when I got back the iPod would play but the computer wouldn’t recognize it, so I couldn’t add new songs. My only choice was to re-format.

Luckily, I had backed up 95% of what I had on an external drive, so I just went out and bought a new iPod. Here’s the problem: not when I try to add folders with my old music back into my new iPod / iTunes the damn iTunes 7 won’t add them back in (maybe some kind of anti-piracy thing).

The irony is 90% of the music I spent days burning CD after CD that I bought on the first iPod.

Question is: Is there something that I am doing wrong or is there some way to get around this shit? Would it be more helpful to download iTunes 6 (it seemed to work fine on that)? Can you even do that? Is there some find of work-around (Mac legal or ill-legal) that will bypass this shit?

If anyone can help me out that would be great. You don’t realize what a big part of your life is an iPod is every day until you don’t have one.

Hiya Jay,

I've never had that problem. Doesn't seem like it should be doing that though, except maybe with some copy-protected songs purchased online, but that shouldn't be the case with all the songs you copied from CDs yourself.

Only two things I can think of on my first cup of coffee. One would be to check that your backup copies of the songs are really saved in the formats you think they are. The other, if you haven't tried it already, would be to copy a few songs from your external drive to your internal drive and then try loading them to the iPod from there to see if there's any difference in your results.

Okay, third thing, and maybe the best idea. You just bought the iPod so why not call Apple support? You should a 90 day free support window even if you didn't get the Apple Care plan.

I had the reverse problem (HD Crashed, iPod was ok) and I used this to get everything back on the computer:

I do remember that I had to install iTunes 7, add my un/pw so that it knew it was my account & confirm something as far as the purchased music.

The main site - http://www.zeleksoftware.com/index.htm - has some other iPod fixes, so you might want to poke around there.

I don't have an iPod but I ran into some problems burning CD's from some songs I downloaded from Burnlounge. I had WMV version 8. I found out I needed at least version 10 so I upgraded, but it had problems with all the songs I had previously downloaded, something about the DRM protection or some such crap. I found out I had to download (buy) and play 1 song to set some licensing mumbo-jumbo in WMV to recognize the songs. After I did that it works fine.

Sounds like you have only certain playlists set to sync.
