2.5 is starting to piss me off

I found this article today:
http://performancing.com/wordpress/w...-wordpress-2-5
and I couldn't help but agree with a heap of it.

Some of the changes in 2.5 are pissing me off.

One of the frustrating things is I used to save drafts of half-written posts or interesting ideas and they were accessable from the top of the write page. Now they're in a separate "drafts" area and, to make matters worse, stupid Wordpress is KEEPING the temporary saves of posts that have already been published. So I've now got a folder of 45 drafts and growing.

Worse still, when I try to bulk delete them I get some kind of error so I'm stuck with them.

I've also lost 5 existing pages - the new thing won't recognise them or make links to them, even though the pages are still sitting there.

I hate that the page preview is no longer down the bottom of the post.

I hate that the categories aren't down the side anymore. I actually forgot to add them to a post because of this.

Just had to rant. I can't really go back to an older version because of security issues.

I was thinking about making post, see what others thought of the newest version.

So far I am actually liking the new version. Sure it's different, but I've gotten use to it pretty quick. I agree, it was nice having the categories on the side, but not a big deal to me, then again, I can see how it could be easy to forget.

I like the new add media function myself plus there are a couple new options in it.

The only problem I have run across so far is with one of my theme's. It had an asides section in the sidebar and for some odd reason it posted my whole post in that section, looked a little odd in the sidebar. I took out the aside code and it fixed the problem. Weird thing though, that particular post will not show up on the index page after that problem.

Other than that, I haven't had any other problems, so far. Maybe I am not a power user.. I also don't save drafts on my adult blogs, so haven't run in to those problems.

As far as the admin, it's too bad they couldn't make a version for people with wide screens, some wasted space, could be real nice, and handy, to have categories and tags on the side.

I'm not fond of the new dashboard at all. The change is initially confusing and it doesn't really seem to add anything or has caused things that used to work to be broken.

It seems to me it's just change for change sake.

I agree that it's change for change sake but I'm getting used to it. I decided a long time ago that I would try not to get pissed at software - it's a wasted energy - now if I could only manage to keep from getting pissed.....

Ok, a little story here about change for change sake.

I live in Burbank and actually take public transportation to my 9-5. One of the benefits, other than not dealing with LA freeways, has always been that half way in between there is a nice little bar at the train station.

Since I've been going there, the clock has always been 12 minutes fast.

A new bartender got tired of being asked if the clock was fast and set it to the real time.

Imagine what he heard when later that evening everyone of the regulars missed their train.

In the case of WP, I suspect that they got tired of hearing how difficult the navigation was and decided to try to improve it.....now they have to listen to all of us experienced users complain.

Oh...the bar...they changed the clock back to being fast.

I haven't had time to look into it yet, but it seems that there are some special 'admin' themes which change the look and even positioning of various elements of the admin interface. I wonder if anyone has made one that either mimics the pre-2.5 layout or lets you choose where the various elements appear on the screen. Maybe even one for wider screens.

I'm not having much in the way of problems with the new version of WP, and having the categories section below the post works pretty well since I use SimpleTags and having the 'display click tags' and categories together is okay for me.

Of course if it was putting things where I didn't want them, or making pages inaccessible, or creating a lot of unneeded drafts, I wouldn't like it...but I'm not seeing any of those things happen on any of my WP installations.

Strange how these things don't happen to everyone. Makes me wonder if it has to do with something that happens (or doesn't) during the installation or upgrade process.

Simon, there are definitely bugs happening with mine. It's possible that I should just bite the bullet and re-install the bastard thing yet again. At the same time, I'm wondering if I should just blunder on and wait for the next upgrade which surely must be on the way. Plenty of other people are experiencing the same bugs so hopefully someone will fix it.

I guess this is what happens when you use free software

Walrus, that train story is very amusing.

Karen ... did you upgrade over existing installations of earlier versions of WordPress, or did you do fresh installations and then import the data from your earlier versions? And what version(s) were you using before you upgraded? Some of those things may be what makes the difference between having and not having certain problems.

This is just my take, but I think they are actually headed in the right direction. I think the older version was getting kind of cluttered. I think it's headed in a more organized direction.

I also think many people are also forgetting, this is pretty much the first draft of the new dashboard. With anything, it takes time to get users input, usability, ect.

I also think, I am using this software that is one of the best blogging programs around and it's free, so I can sure live with a couple little annoyances. Not to mention a huge community that pumps out pretty nice themes and plug-ins for free.

One thought I had recently about the admin/dashboard, to bad they couldn't turn it into like an ajax layout where you can set it up as you want. Drag and drop like you want it. Kinda like facebook.

Just rolling with the flow myself, it sure hasn't slowed down my blogging...

Funny, just the other day I read about one of the WP big wigs ripping up Movable Type (they started it). When I first was looking into blogging, WP and MT were some what neck and neck, that sure didn't last long.

With 2.51 I deleted the old files and uploaded the new ones (so I didn't just overwrite the existing ones on the server).

Part of my problem is laziness at present. I've got other things to do so I can happily spend time whining about WP but I'm not spending much time trying to fix it.

I've heard tales of two clean installs, on the same server. One works flawlessly, one doesn't. Not sure if I buy into that but....

For me, no problems but I've only done one clean install. I'll be doing some upgrades over the weekend.

There was a learning curve for me with the new interface but it wasn't too painful. I think I prefer it now, actually. I do think they should have offered an option between the old interface and the new one - it's most a template thing after all.

Just in case someone wants to try it, here are links regarding the layout of the admin/write post screens in 2.5 and how to hack a few files to move the categories and tags to the right sidebar of the write post screen.

Talking about changes here...
http://www.cre8d-design.com/blog/200...25-admin-hack/

The hack files themselves...
http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6709

WordPress Ideas thread to add your opinion...

I don't find anything in the current layout aggravating enough to make me want to hack files and keep track of changes for future upgrades, so if anyone tries this please let us know how things go.

Okay, I thought I'd give a spin.

Either it doesn't work, or I messed some thing up. I wrote a big long post, went to click publish and nothing, same for the save button. Though it did auto save, so I don't think I'll lose my post.

As for the layout or how it changed. It does make a wider posting/write area, which I like. It also put most of the other panels to the right, which actually I don't think I like.

Big reason I am not crazy about it, is that the Publish Status area gets pushed down to the bottom of the group, I liked having it on the right, on top, and if you have a good number of categories, it gets pushed down further. Of course I could close tabs, but still have to scroll down.

I tired it on one blog and I'm going back, I was liking the new-old one..

Just my take on it.

I'm working on a new install on the latest version.
thought I would make a category for individual pornstars and feed them with BA, the side bar takes 15+ seconds to load after 400+ categories.
another thing is the category add button disa-fucking-pears from time to time.
I'm also having a hard time wrapping my head around simple tags and the built in tagging all of my posts have two sets of tags

I'm not game enough to hack the admin area, so I'll just put up with it until the new upgrade happens.

I couldn't get Ultimate Tag Warrior to work with this version so I've just given up on them, using the new tag system now.

I think Hack was sort of the wrong word to use for this "fix". All that is needed is to copy 4 files into the wp-admin directory, and one file in to the wp-admin/css folder, thats it. If it doesn't work right, you just copy the original files back.

Not that alleviates any ones reluctance to mess with their word press files, thats understandable, just saying there is not much to it...

Your correct UTW won't work, try simple tags.

Regarding Ultimate Tag Warrior, in case you had a problem getting your tags imported because you had too many of them for the WP importer to handle, you can find some info here:
http://zedomax.com/blog/tag/ultimate...-wordpress-25/

But like Walrus, I switched over to Simple Tags which seems to be working fine for me so far.
