Question What is the correct size for a favicon.ico?

I'm a little confused here... I was probably one of the first adult webmasters to put a favicon with each of their major sites; back in 1999 the common rule was that a favicon could be only 16x16 pixels.

Is this still true, or is it in the meantime 32x32 or even 64x64 pixels?

I see so many favicons which show shadings I could never archive in 16x16...

Thanks for your help.

Use Photoshop and make them bigegr then what you will save them as.

Look at this page
http://www.golivein24.com/tips/favicon/index.html
It is about using Photoshop and Golive on a Mac, but it works the same for Windows and the Photoshop pulg-in is available for both platforms.

Great - now I'm as confused as I was before!

The article Cleo linked states "The final dimensions of the icon will be 16x16 pixels..."
and Jim claims in his Newsletter "Make a small icon about 32 x 32" |doh|

So what the is it - r e a l l y ?

Not that it is a great one, but that is how I made the one for my link list.
http://www.cleos-porn-links.com/

I also put this in my header
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

It seems to make it show up in more browsers. The one from this board doesn't show up in Mozilla, but my LL one does.

I measured what size it shows up in my browser and it is 16x16 so I would say that no matter what size you make the image it will display at 16x16 unless Windows does it different.

My Internet Explorer is somehow bugggered - it never shows any favicons when opening a page... It keeps them next to the bookmarks for a few days, and then somehow loses them again...

Funniest thing is: half the time when I open somthing in IE I get the Netscape Logo next to the URL - probably because Netscape is set as my standard browser...

Cleo - what does this little bit mean: type="image/x-icon" / ?

To this day I used to make my favicons in 16x16, but it's kinda hard to fit anything in such a small space (though: with picXS.com I managed to fit the entire name) = usually only two characters (like Cleo's or my TH TropicHeat) or a simple symbol. I would never manage to squeeze something like yahoo's icon into 16x16... Today I made several ones in 32x32, but it looks like the browser is re-sizing them, and they look rather blurred...

So I'm still confused!

I think that just helps identify what it is and how it should be handled, but I'm not really sure either.

I downloaded the icoformat file for Windows.

I placed it in Photoshop's Plugins folder.

I created a 16x16 and then "Save As" showed an extra file format *.ICO

Saved it as an icon and uploaded it with the coding on the index file.

Excellent |skull| I used to get my favicons from a JAVA applet on some site someplace.

Thanks Cleo & GeorgeTH

Trouble is I don't know about 32x32 etc..... and also these favicons never last more than three or four days.

I've had bottles of milk last longer!!!

With one exception, http://www.smutgremlins.com/ I have an old MMX200 Mhz PC in my lounge which still has the Smut Gremlins favicon on it. Maybe 3 or 4 years it's been on there..... I remember talking to Emerald about this, asking her how she did it, and I tried to get it to work on another machine, but it never lasted.

My conclusion is....... favicons are fuckin' haunted. |ghost|

From what I understand they only show up in IE if the site has been bookmarked and you have pledged your devotion to Mr. Billy Goat Gates.

Actually IE on the Mac doesn't display them at all, doesn't have that function. Mozilla usually displays them, but not for this board, don't know why. Safari seems to always display them, but I can't use it for this board.

On my Win2K machine IE doesn't seem to display them for anything unless I leave the browser window open overnight and then only sometimes. Mozilla displays it for my LL, but not for this board, bur does seem to display them for many sites.

LOL, In 98 all of us in the design industry were thinking about moving to the PC, but then Apple bought NeXT and promised us the ease of the Mac with the power of UNIX. Finally late last year it all started really coming together and this year with Quark releasing a native version of QuarkXPress it is here and all I can say is it is all that and more, it is fucking awesome.

The kewl thing is that it runs all of both the new and really old Mac software, Linux software, *nix software, NeXT software and talks to Windows machines using Samba.

My machine has not crashed once this year and the only time I restart is when I do a system update or mess with hardware.

The *nix tools are really starting to come out like this MySQL tool that came out a few days ago, http://cocoamysql.sourceforge.net/

The next version of Mac OS X will be out before then end of the year and it looks like the new Apple is really listening to its customers, unlike the old Apple. http://www.apple.com/macosx/panther/

Actually with Apple buying NeXT the Apple of today isn't really the old Apple at all since all the NeXT engineers are who are writing and developing for Apple now.

Hi,

I created one on this TGP Smilinpussy.com but it doesn't work here. I read this in an article:

"Of course, there are weirdnesses to take into account. If you test the favicon on your own site, you may get only one shot at it. Once a site is bookmarked, it's hard to flush out that listing completely. Even if you delete the pages from your cache, delete the listings from the Favorites menu, and reboot, re-bookmarking a previously bookmarked site may not cause the new icon to "take". If this happens, enlist the help of somebody who hasn't previously bookmarked your page."

So could someone please check this out and let me know?
Thx

I do not use an icon on purpose.
It's a lot easier to read the logs and see how many bookmarked by Not having an icon. "it's in the error logs"

Just a thought

dareutwo,

That's why I would love to hear/read that now it can be definitely 32x32 pixels - but it sounds like not...

This is why they suggest you work at 32 x 32 and then reduce it in Photoshop.
