I have to agree with Jim

Jim - I have to agree with your pet peeve in today's newsletter.

Text is a form of communication between the writer and the reader and in this business that communication is vitally important.

Spelling mistakes and poor grammer interupts that communication and any interuption can lead to lost sales.

Not everyone has good grammar or spelling including many people for who English is their first language. Some are, dyslexic or have other disabilities. Many people just don't type well.

As long as I can figure out what they are saying I can communicate with them and after all isn't that the true reason that we come to the board?

Unless someone is asking about the use of proper English why should embarrass then by pointing out their grammar mistakes?

The language off the boards is casual English conversation that allows the personality of the writer to come through. For me this seems much better then any formal proper English where all I can tell about the writer is whether they did good in English class.

Cleo - I agree with you but boards are one thing while sites are another.

A website that wants to sell something - or even a spam email that attempts to sell something - should be done professionally.

Even if you want it to look amateurish it should still be done professionally and good grammar and good spelling are part of that professionalism.

Correct spelling in particular is not hard to achieve - all good programmes (and yes that is spelt correctly) have spell checkers but few people seem to know how to use them.

Umm I believe programme is a - a scheme; a prospectus; especially, a brief outline or explanation of the order to be pursued, or the subjects embraced, in any public exercise, performance, or entertainment; a preliminary sketch.

A computer program has always been program - A set of coded instructions that enables a machine, especially a computer, to perform a desired sequence of operations

.. but now we are gonna get into "US" vs. "English" english.

The writing process is a skill that can be developed just as the other skills in language: grammar, reading, listening and speaking.

I also think that it is important to write in a correct way. How many times we came across a website with a great design but with lots of grammar and spelling errors, it takes down the site for me.

I have learned over the years to try and write proper english. With the help of my wife who is an avid poetry writer. She does a pretty good job of helping me when doing text things with my sites.

I used to be a librarian, and I'm technically also an English teacher (although I will have to be in severe financial trouble before I front up to a school).

I was quite happy to read what Jim wrote, and yes, it's probably due to my pedantic English-teacher nature. The "alot" thing is something that's a bit of a peeve for me.

And the "could care less" statement - it's something I had thought was a peculiarly American thing, I just thought it was a standard way of saying it in the US. I had put it up there with "we'll be out there rooting for you"* and "she was out on her fanny"*

Of course English is a fluid thing, and with the advent of SMS messaging language experts say that English is changing and it's time to get used to the way people now spell things...

* In Australia, rooting = fucking
* In Australia, fanny = pussy
Thus it is that the theme song to the Nanny is quite RUDE! As are fanny packs. And if you're rooting for the US... remember to wear a condom.

Forgot to add - bad spelling on a paysite tour is BAD BAD BAD
To me it just looks so unprofessional.

Example: ARS Ladies Secret has 3 tours. The second tour is really good except for numerous spelling mistakes, so I refuse to use it. It looks like the place is being run by a bunch of illiterate amateurs.
Ditto the site called "What We Women Want" - can't handle the title (and it's got gay hardcore on the tour... but I won't go into that!)

So first my excuse for using weird English from time to time: I'm not a native English speaker!

But I agree - it really pisses me off when I get banners from some sponsors [and some really BIG ones] with lots of spelling mistakes - no chance that you can change it!

Bad spelling can get you a lot of search engine traffic.

For every webmaster who cannot spell, there's 1000's of surfers who input bad spelling into the search engines.

I'm sure it was a fitting name for "Fanny Brice" the bawdy performer from the Ziegfield Follies (made famous by Barbra)...

...but how about for Fanny Cosby who wrote such classic songs as:

Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine
Christ the Lord is King
or
Cum er Come to the Fountain

Wonder if Pussy Cosby was inspired by all those "OH MY GODs" eminating from lips at very specific moments of copulation?? LMAO

or how about Fanny Farmer .. who put a pussy in every kitchen..

LMAO... sorry only 1/2 a cup of coffee so far.. this thread really hit a 'fanny' bone..
