Traffic Trading 101

I need a basic lesson on traffic trading. A hardlink trade is one in which I put a link on my site to your site and you do the same for me?

Then I see these traffic trading scripts. I assume that it tracks the hits coming from my site and sends traffic back?

Some scripts skim some traffic coming to me and sends it to whom I am trading with and in turn sends some of their traffic back to me?

How can one tell the difference between the two types of scripts I mentioned above when one sees them on a site?

I told you I needed a basic lesson?

Perhaps there are some article that I could read?

Thanks.
