Iframes and cookies

I'm doing some work on one of my mainstream sites at the moment and am currently contemplating the following question, which would apply equally to adult.

If I load a sponsors site (using my referral code) in an iframe on my site will that be enough to drop the sponsors cookie on the surfers machine so they are flagged as my referral if they subsequently visit the site and buy something?

I'm kind of thinking "no", that they would need to actually click through using my code but cant quite get my head round it.
