A gift from Yahoo for Howard Stern fans

Yahoo! To Webcast Stern's Swan Song
by Gavin O'Malley, Thursday, Dec 15, 2005 6:00 AM EST
YAHOO! ON WEDNESDAY ANNOUNCED PLANS to offer Howard Stern fans exclusive live video and audio footage of the shock jock's last day on FM radio this Friday. The stream will become available to all Yahoo! viewers at 9 a.m., following Stern's finale terrestrial airing, and follow him as he travels through New York City on a Yahoo!-branded double-decker bus, and on to a party at the Hard Rock Café. Sirius Satellite Radio, where Stern is taking his show next year, is providing the only advertising that will appear along with the Webcast, according to a Yahoo! spokeswoman. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Asked about whether Stern's image was in line with the Internet giant, a Yahoo! spokeswoman responded via e-mail: "Howard Stern is a media maverick, with a large national following and Yahoo! believes that this is a great opportunity to leverage its best product assets to create a unique community and experience for Howard Stern fans as he makes his move from terrestrial radio into his new endeavor with Sirius satellite radio."

Yahoo! plans to promote a number of its existing services during the event such as Yahoo! Groups, where Stern's fan may sign up to receive e-mail updates. To promote Yahoo!'s social networking/community site Yahoo! 360, the Internet is encouraging users to follow the event via a "Fan on the Scene," blogger who will be blogging his thoughts and digital photos. Photos taken on Friday will be circulated on Flickr--the online picture-sharing community that Yahoo! bought earlier this year. Additionally, by downloading a photostream widget that Yahoo! has made available, fans can position a countdown to the Webcast directly on their desktops.
