Ahh, to answer my own question, this is a great article from 1998 on the downfall of Xpics. A great read if you ask me.
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,15901,00.html XXXcash also claims to have started in 1996, so I guess that is the year quite a few sites got started. Try to find a site that started in 1995, and we should have a winner.
