Techie question for the resident smart people

OK OK, we all know that I'm really hoping that Sparky answers this, but anybody who knows the answer, PLEASE chime in

I am trying to move a 12 gig video file from my pc to a brand new 320 gig external hard drive. I'm getting an error message that there is not enough room

The external drive seems to work fine, I can move smaller files to it without any problems. Could it be a cache issue? Maybe the pc needs more space for temporary storage during the move?

Somebody please take pity on a damsel in distress!
