Heres a link to a favicon maker that works great. You make a nice square image in photoshop or whatever, then use this page and it makes it into a very nice favicon for you.
http://www.html-kit.com/e/favicon.cgi I've been using html-kit for years as my html/perl/php/javascript editor too. Good stuff.
