I can wait the 3 days it takes the check to get here (especially since I have a line of credit with the bank so most funds are available instantly - lol)

Exactly.

$1000 is usually the minimum for wires.

Cost to cash a check for me: $2 = 0.2% fee
Cost for a wire for me: $35 + $12 = 4.7% fee

If you add all the small fees you pay over the year, it adds up to pretty much and I like to keep unnecessary fees to a minimum
