Q re hosting (no don't spam me!)
ok, so now that I'm submitting more & whatnot, I look at my bandwith and WHOA!
I'm burning about 5x what I was 2 months ago & it's gonna cost me a fortune in overages (well a fortune to me hehe ![]() so I'm looking around at previous posts here to compare virtual packages and see that there is a great discrepancy in pricing ie: one host offers 100gb/month for $80, another for $20. both plans look pretty similar & have everything else I need, both are reputable. so my question is...why the huge discrepancy? I need some advice before I jump the current ship into unknown, ya know ![]() any thoughts? thanks in advance, Ponygirl |

Pretty much the ones who charge more offer more. Like daily backups, better tech support, etc. But not always.

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless
|
could be may variables that add to the differences...type of bandwidth they are selling, backups included? options included ... It could simply be a the markup the host is implementing...look around do your homework your host is one of the most important choices you make.

I agree that hosting is most important - I have been looking & comparing for a while now as it's the first time I have changed hosts and it does make me a bit nervous. My current host is great, I have had absolutely no problems with them, but need more bandwith without spending a great deal more $ right now.
Actually, I am leaning heavily towards Webair right now and that's why I asked about the pricing difference - there seem to be some great deals to be had there ![]() Ponygirl |

Additionally, have you tried speaking to your current host to see if they will give you a custom deal? If they have done a good job for you in the past you should give them the opportunity to keep your business IMHO =) |

I like who I am hosted with and they had a little older dedicated box for I think 100.00 - 110.00 with 360 gig or 1 mbps that I started with a good while back, I can pm the host to you as posting the name may spam..

A quick shout out for webair, I have two accounts with them - one mainstream, one adult and have found their reliability and prices to be excellent, and I have looked around a fair bit. I dont think I've had any single minute of downtime in 6 months plus. Only slight problem is that the server stats seem to go down every so often and tech support hasnt been that quick in fixing the problem.

Ponygirl,
I've been on cyberwurx for about a year now, and their service is speedy and overall I have no complaints. Still, the last month my bandwidth suddenly jumped by 3 fold. That's when I went "woa, is this for real? I gotta switch, like right now." So, I switched over to webair yesterday. So far it looks like the page load for htmls are really fast and their online chat tech support is nice. Only thing was my php script was loading a bit slowly (but looks like a slight mod to my scripts fixed that problem, at least for non-script intensive pages) and some of my scripts are php version 5 and they run v4 on virtual hosts, but no big deal. They told me they'll be upgrading by next month. So far I'm happy with my new webair account.

You also want to know what size pipe your server is on.
Doesn't matter if you get 10,000 gigs per month if you are only on a 5 mbps pipe or something. Also how good their techs are at setting stuff up. The main thing is how well supported your server is and how fast you can move traffic through it. |

well in all honesty when you break it down you are just better off getting your own server for the money, cause you seem to be increaseing your BW 5X as two months ago. So I would start looking for a server, next thing you will be looking for is more IP's and more domain names. My personnal opinon is that it's easier to manage them all in one place, and if you have issues you dont have to call tech support everytime if you have a little knowedge on how to run a server, but you can always pay extra for that. It's nice to have the options of completly doing what you want when you want, IE install software, add remove sites, etc.
But the down part of this is you have to be on your toes, you will need some kind of monitoring software or pay the company to do it for you. Also if you have 100 sites on one box and something goes wrong and the box goes down and you do not have back ups, well you know the outcome of that. All sites are down and mostly down for good if not a very long time. But you can also cluster your servers with most companies if your purchase multible ones. And thats where the fun begins. lol. Good luck in your choice. |

There are a lot of things that can affect bandwith price
#1 thing are the faciltys and the people that work there a guy with a few servers in his basement and a backup gas generator isnt gonna have the overhead of a company in a real data center building with racks of back up battery power I know the company I am at a few years ago invested a couple mil for emergency back up power something like that is gonna make the prices go up a bit

No offence Apu, but when they were handing out religions you must have been out taking a whizz

I use three hosting providers at the moment, the cheapest one I went with because of the price.
Big mistake, no customer service whatsoever and I paid 1 year in advance ![]() Your better off spending extra if it means you have help avaliable when you need it and a reliable service. I use webair aswell, great service and there's just about always someone there on live support.
