I agree that meta description tags are sometimes displayed by SE's. This doesn't mean they have any ranking influence

Can any of you provide a proof that meta description or meta keywords tag are essential for good ranking in SERP?

Suit yourself, Never heard of anyone who got ranked so well just because he used meta tags.

But why let newbies believe meta tags are such savior?
