Arrow Problem - No Periods in submissions!

ok...I know I am not the only one, but I'm averaging about 60% of webmasters who submit sites to LL's and Directories that DO NOT ADD A PERIOD at the end of their site descriptions this is starting to drive me nuts...I know for our directory that we have given 3 weeks of notice and it's in plain view (right on the submission form) to remind those to put a period at the end....

So....I am a very patient person, but lets "NOT" push the limits. For those who know they do this and don't take that "ONE SINGLE" extra key stroke on the keyboard, be aware, we are no longer approving sites without periods at the end of each sentence.

Thank-you. I was concerned that I was being a bit harsh by enforcing the horizontal scroll rule on my TGP.

No worries....just tonight I rejected 62 site submissions that didn't have a period at the end of their sentences. I just don't understand why its been happening so much lately. At one point I was rejecting more than I was approving.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm lately.

I, on the other hand, quietly curse you for adding ending punctuation to your descriptions. There's no winning in this game, is there?

I've been submitting galleries and sites for 10 years and never use a period.

When someone uses a period in their description in a submit to me I just delete it. It doesn't bother me nor my script.

Yup, from what I've seen, most submitters don't use a period. Some use an exclamation point, the bastards, but that gets deleted along with whatever text it inevitably accompanies "Watch these" or "for the first time".

I'm also picky about periods. I like them after a description but I don't want to enforce a "period" rule so I just add them myself to submitted sites. It's a pain in the ass but since it's a personal preference, I figure I'll just edit as needed.

I have no rules about having or not having a period because I know how difficult it can be for submitters these days and I want to make it as easy as I can for the greatest number of my partners.

ok...Im seeing a trend here....what is it about the period that people take the time to type out a sentence but don't do a period. I guess what I am trying to figure out here is "why" this seems to be common and as one put it, "the norm" of things.

Am I just being too picky with the period thing? I'd actually like to hear comments from some of the BIG LL players. However, before I clicked to post this reply I just did a bit of a check with fellow LL's and directories...I'm shocked!!! lol....Penisbot, Jays-xxx, and others have site listings without periods on many...

Man...back in school if I didn't put punctuation into my homework etc, I'd be hearing a few words from the teach....

LOL....hows my grammar above peeps Notice my multiple periods?

When I first started doing free sites, I left out the period because one LL's rules specifically said that the period would mess with their script. I didn't know if this was common or not and if a script built with php would just concatenate the description to something else in the script and make it act funny. I'm no longer submitting to that other site, so I've tried to remember to get into the habit of punctuating a sentence. The period won't piss anyone off will it? I know leaving it out pisses off a few (and would piss me off as well a little).

I am NOT the grammar police. I just edit poor grammar when necessary. As I said, these submitters have more important things to worry about. Add to that we all make mistakes so penalizing for something so trivial is ridiculous IMHO

Not sure what a period would do to a script "Odysseus"...I do know that many using PHP/MySQL messes with words with apostrophies (replacing them with forward slashes). Perhaps I shouldn't be too anal about it if this seems to be an acceptance with many LL's as I am beginning to see.

Anyways, its 730am here and I have been up all night working on my new toplist site. I will have to check back here and see how many submitters I scared off ...lol oopsy!

Night everyone !

In PHP, a period is the operator to join two strings together. Kind of like glue. I was just thinking that if the description got "glued" to something else, then that would mess up the flow of a script. But, like I said, I've only seen one LL that warns about this on his rules page. In fact he states NO punctuation at the end.

I'm still swimming in the php baby pool, so what I say may likely just be pure conjecture.

rejecting for sites that don't have a period? Wow, that seems pretty harsh to me. I don't have a period at the end of my descriptions, and those that do put one on their submits, I push that delete key and get rid of it. Gotta be the simplest thing in the world to add/remove as necessary? As stated by Surfn, mistakes can also happen, especially when looking at each LL to see who wants one, who doesn't, what color underpants you need to be wearing. I prefer to let my submitters concentrate on building decent sites than fretting about getting rejected for a lack of a punctuation mark in their descrition. Just my 2 cents.

Yea, this is definitely one of the little things. Since I prefer to have a period on the end of my descriptions, I simply add one...as very few submitters use periods.

From a submitters pov, it's tough enough keeping up with all the important rules...using or not using a period isn't a big enough issue to worry about imo. Certainly not anything worth declining a site over...quality submitters are too hard to come by

hmmm....seems like the period issue I brought up has caused a lot of rough water with another forum as well. I was just seeing so many submissions with out a period and I just thought it looked strange in listings to not see the end of a sentence and I was getting tired of stopping in the middle of a busy schedule to edit listings. Although I didn't think it would explode with a few and dumb-founded by others as it has.

So....I am one to never ignore porn surfers or webmasters who submit sites so I will toss the towel in and go with the flow. I am generally pretty lax with rules and often let a lot of things pass when I approve sites.

So...lets close this one topic and I will remove the Period rule from the submission form. Wasn't my intentions to cause the boats to rock.

Ice Cold beers on me peeps...well, whenever I get my paycheck that is

Man, don't know how your script is coded, but if it's PHP maybe the following piece of code will be useful:

Code:
<?php
 $end = $description[strlen($description) - 1];
 $end != "." ? $description .= "." : 1;
?>
Assuming that the name of the variable is $description, this code will put a period at the end, in case the last char is not a period.

Hi NetGoonie

What is the fucking period?
Is it the point (.) or some other punctuation at the end of the sentence?
Some ll have the rule: not punctuation in the description.

hmmm....me thinks the post here was a no no. I admit when to toss in the towel, so, that period rule has been removed because the one thing I do, is listen to others. It's called reasonable compromize....the idea of the script to automatically put a period in is a cool thought by the way ClickBuster. Anyways, with that being said, lets just write off this thread and move on to bigger and better things....

like beers at my place, I'm buying

How about capitalization of the first letter in a sentence?

My script allows that but makes all the other characters lower case no matter what is entered. Needless to say if someone mentions the gals name other than the first word I have to capitalize it manually

I can set it to anything...make all text capitals, all lower case, or just to allow text as it's entered. I use to allow longer descriptions but most submitters were repeating themselves so I lowered it to 50 characters. Of course I may rewrite the entire description 1. ) if I'm in a good mood 2. ) if I think the site will get better traffic

Good to see you removed the period rule. You should definitely keep the werewolves are not allowed to submit during a full moon rule though...those damn werewolves, they're always doing the craziest things during a full moon.

62 deleted submissions for a period...that's just amazing. People wonder why submitters get frustrated from time to time.
