Anyone set up a Wireless G Network for the Home Computers, and do you like it?

my old linksys router died and I bought a new one that has both wired and wireless capabilities, which gave me the idea that maybe I want to do a wireless network... at the very least to MadHatter's office computer so I don't have to run cables across my shiny new floors, lol.

Has anyone set up a wireless, and do you like it? I bought the Wireless-G with Speed Booster 2.4 GHz router by LinkSys (It is what WalMart had in stock, I'm so limited here, lol). While I can still take it back, do you recommed going with this, or a different type / brand?

Any issues with interference with other things in your house?

I don't have any houses close to me that are occupied, how worried do you have to be about someone tapping in? The closest occupied house to me would be about 500' away.

Thanks alot. It would be nice to get rid of this huge mess of wires I have connecting two different internet connections to 3 computers.

The speed is decent. If you use WEP encoding or other security features, outsiders will not be able to access your network without a password / code key.

I have two wireless units in the house (3rd floor and 1st floor) and I wander around using my laptop where ever I want including on the patio in summer (and even the park across the street if I want).

Also, important to note that it is better to get a card like this for the PCs:

rather than using the USB adapters (speed issues).

That is the same model I have at the house. I didn't really think I would see that much difference between the 11mb and the 54mb, but, it does work quite well and is a pretty well featured router. If you move files from one machine to another in your house, make sure you have 802.11G cards that are capable of the 54mb/sec -- and possibly the SuperG cards that bond two channels to get 108mb/sec.

You can turn on encryption, turn off the SSID broadcast, and generally make it difficult for the neighbors to get in. You can limit what MAC addresses can connect to your network as well. Not that the encryption is bulletproof, but, it'll keep the casual person out.

You probably won't need to change channels on it as you're probably not close enough for collisions with a neighbor. If you have any 2.4ghz cordless phones, you might need to change the channel on the linksys, although, I think the out of the box config should work fine.

wireless is the way to go allows so much freedom - I do still have my wifes and my other spare pc hard wired as those wires were ran in the basement. plus those cards arnt that cheap, but for my laptop its great... plus if you want to put a desktop upstairs, it just so easy, plus a wirless pci card in and a way you go....

OMG you should see behind my file cabinets which has my two printers, my two routers and my phone sitting on them. I swear the wires are like 4' deep, lmao.

I called linksys because wanted to make sure I could get one pci card and flip between TWO routers, and she told me everything could interfer with it (microwaves, cordless phones, etc) and it was a lot slower, I have a slow enough connection, would it be that much slower?

Since I typed in live chat, I never know if I'm speaking with someone from India who doesn't understand the question.

That is the card I ordered from Sams Club. I only ordered 1 for now for the computer on the other side of the house, and if works well, want to get the rest on wireless.
