Unhappy Found out the hard way I'm allergic to Green Beans Now

This was just bizzare! I've eaten green beans all my life. Thursday I had some for dinner, and my mouth felt a little funky, but didn't think much about it.

Last night I had some more, and it was the first thing I ate of my dinner. I'm realizing my mouth is sore and feeling odd. Went into the bathroom and got the flashlight out, I had welts down the sides of my tongue, and the inside of my mouth. WTF? Guess I can't eat green beans anymore.

This morning, my throat is scratchy, my mouth still feels weird, but the welts are gone. Kinda wheezy today too. It just amazes me though how you can eat something for a long time then BAMN you are allergic. Anyone else develop allergies like that out of the blue?

Yikes...that sounds nasty!

I've definitely developed more allergies as I've gotten older. And some foods I've enjoyed all my life now reak havoc on my system. That doesn't stop me from eating them altogether, but definitely not as often as I used to.

However, I've NEVER had anything happen like you describe V. If that doesnt' clear up real quick, think I'd be off to the doctor!

That's awful !!

That's exactly how it happened for me and shellfish.. I LOVED shrimp but then one time I was out having dinner and the next thing I know I'm in the ER !!

You'll have to be careful too... b/c many times that veggie is prepared with other veggies ...

I can't get anything shrimpy on my hands...

PS. I was just thinking about how much you love pepper.. the only person in the world I know that likes pepper like that

RC - Is it possible that the breen beans were contaminated by something? Were they two servings of green beans from the same place, or two different places? I can't imagine not being able to eat green beans for the rest of my life.

Oh yeah, pepper pretty much owns everything. I put it on everything.

They were fresh frozen from Trader Joes, and said on the bag no additives or preservatives. Both times were from the same batch. That was the first thing I suspected was a preservative.

Thinking back though, I've eaten 3 bean salad recently at a resturant and had a lesser response, so I think it was building up to this. My mouth is still sore, and feels really weird.

I'm also allergic to Poha berries, which I've only had twice. They broke my lips out in tiny blisters. But since they are native to Hawaii, I think I'm safe, lol.

I'm also allergic to Mango sap, not the fruit. I knew they made my hands itch, so I wore gloves and helped friends make mango chutney. Never though about the fact I was wiping my face with my hands. I woke up the next day with my face rashed and my eyes almost swollen shut. When I went to the Dr., she asked if I'd ever had a reaction to poison ivy, and I said yes, years ago. Seems mangos are in the same family as poison ivy, had no clue. People that react to posion ivy, have to be careful with mango sap. Go figure, lol.

And yes Bree, I still love pepper! Although gave up french fries, so don't coat them on them any more, lol. I used to pour a pile of pepper and salt and just roll them in it, I really love pepper. The french fries were just the vehicle to get the pepper to my mouth.

I had a friend with a shellfish allergy, he would be in the hospital too from it, you watch yourself too. Scared me last night, the hospital isn't open yet here, and it is a long drive to Vegas if I'd of needed it. Should be open this month, when it does, it is just down the street fortunately.

Yea, no 3 bean salad either. I've gone completely vegetarian, vegan most days, and I hate having to cut one out I like.

I was lookin on the net food allergies vs food intolerances. Sounds like this was allergy, and you have more intolerances. I saw some really NASTY pics of people hiving out to food allergies. Not something I want to test again, unless Dr. does a scratch test or something. Do not want to see if the next time is worse.

That really sucks. Sorry about that. Good for you that there are so many other veggies out there that rock just as much as green beans. I wonder what it is in the green beans that you're allergic to.

Are you a fan of just black pepper, or peppers in general, like hot peppers? I am a fan of everything peppers

Throw some roasted almonds on those bitches and you're all set.

RC - If you're down with vegan, veggetarian, have you checked out the books, "Hot, Spicy, & Meatless"? There are two of them that I know of. Best shit ever. I eat meat. But, Yeah. Check it if you have not yet

You and MadHatter, he loves meat. He is almost my opposite as far as food. I haven't had a steak, or a hamburger since 1983. I did eat chicken and seafood on and off, but don't even do that anymore. Only thing I do rarely now is cheese, I try not to do that even.

I'm pretty lucky in that respect. My girlfriend is even more of a carnivore than I am...that lil monkey will eat nothing but meat and cheese for lunch! Hell, I have to insist we have a salad with dinner from time to time...lol.

Sorry to hear that when you are a vegetarian... looks like you have to watch your diet. Green beans are yummy but there is life without them.

Red Cherry - maybe you should visit an allergist. Sometimes 'new' allergies are pre-cursors to something else that's just around the corner. An allergist will be able to determine the extent of your food allergy and could in most cases tell you what to do to prevent or eliminate it completely. This worked for me on certain foods.

Case in point. Since birth I have been violently allergic to peanuts - could not even tolerate the SMELL of them. So I stayed away for years and years from anything peanutty of course. The allergist told me that sometimes with some people a 'cleansing' helps alleviate and in some cases, eliminates allergic reactions.
Well, I did the 'cleansing' thing last year because of my ulcer and colitis and Irritable bowel and since then I have had NO allergic reaction to peanuts. I do have my anaphylaxis 'pen' on standby, just in case but so far so good and I am enjoying PB & J sammiches too!

I'm not saying that everyone will have the same result that I did, but apparently some good things can and do come out of this sort of thing. Investigate via an allergist first before you try anything though and good luck to you and your health!

I was born with god knows how many allergies...
Food, animals and I also had athsma.

Living in South America kinda bombarded my immune system with all sorts of nasties. (I survived a Cholera outbreak!)

I still have some allergies. I cannot eat peanuts or anything that has peanut by products. Nuts in general don't bother me one bit.

I am still allergic to all animals but I deal with it because I am a sucker for pets. I have to wash my hands after handling critters and resist the temptation to scratch my eyes.

But I hear ya RC, allergies are no fun to have... they make life a real pain in the ass.
