Remember too that with a long scrolling tour, you are often reusing the same graphics and pieces over and over through the page, so the overhead isn't anywhere near as big as the amount of page coverage you get. Keep the images sizes good and the compress on them tight, and the page doesn't have to be overwhelming to load.
