Hi Amber
Did he copy anything other than the meta tags? You may already know this, but in the search engine world the "keyword" meta tag is almost obsolete now. The major SE's simply ignore them. The "title" tag is still very important, but the old days of sweating over the exact placement of keywords in the other meta tags are long gone. If he hasn't stolen actual copy from your page, I wouldn't worry about it. Life is too short and the guy is just wasting his time. On the other hand, if he's stolen more than just meta tag content, send him a cease-and-desist notice. I think you can find one at adultlaw.com, if I'm remembering the correct URL. A cease-and-desist notice, and a followup that threatens to sue someone for $250,000 in copyright infringement, will usually scare most people into agreeing to your demands. Sure, you're just bluffing him/her, but potential lawsuits can be powerful motivators. Last edited by Fisty Palmer; 2003-09-02 at 12:30 PM.. |

I wrote a nice thorough reply but lost it to a damned "Cannot find server" error. Don't you just hate that?
Anyway, the gist of it was that it is probably not worth the trouble of doing everything you can do about it, like contacting his host and registrar and sponsors about copyright theft. And, since he is by definition a loser and an asshole already, be wary of his trying to get payback by variuous dirty tricks in response. Send him a simple informal cease and desist email, record his whois info, copy the stolen pages to your hard file so you have proof if you want to follow it up later, and maybe publish the offense and the whois on whatever boards you frequent. Be ready to expose him if he shows his face and pulls more tricks. |

Many still leave their meta tags in place for the smaller SEs that still use them, but Google doesn't use them at all, save for the title tag. The description tag is occasionally used for descriptive purposes in the search results (unless it uses the open directorie's description), but many agree it's no longer checked for keywords. Now days most internet marketers optimize their pages with title tags, anchor text, page rank, and the distribution of a particular keyword throughout the body of the page. |

I have hard copies of all my sites..
He did not take anything but all the meat tags, including the title word for word.. I put a lot of investigation and trial and error behind them..a month after putting them up they way they are, I was first place in goggle for specific targeted searches, and have been for a long time. I don't mind emulation, but down right copying I do mind..at least change the way the wording is a bit.. |

I'm not trying to step on the toes of any time-honored optimization strategies here, but merely sharing what I've learned from my research. Of course, everyone is entitled to a different opinion, which is what makes forums like this so useful. |tomatoe| Last edited by Fisty Palmer; 2003-09-02 at 03:44 PM.. |

ok..I did have to bitch and let it out..it pissed me off..
so now I let it go and go on.. And I too disagree with the "experts"..been optimizing mainstream websites a long time..and as much as "they" say that meta tags are on the way out..well..,they aint dead yet by any means..not to say at all that keyword density, alt tags, linking, etc..are not on the way up too.. Just my 2 bitching moaning and complaining cents.. ![]() |

Funny,
I just peeped into the SEO-chat newsletter today and trashed it but the emphasis was on the description, meta tags and keywords... |

Even if Google ignores meta tags, I think it's still important to use them.
If Google does read 'em, then you will get an edge on sites which don't use 'em. If Google doesn't read 'em then you haven't lost anything by including them..... they may help with other engines. As for people copying pages....... that's a temporary webmaster trick. They'll find another career quicker than they think doing that.
