Definitely keep at least a local backup on your hard drive at all times. In about eight years of being a webmaster, I have had to use these backups about 10 times. Without them everything would have been lost. (thousands and thousands of pages) You never know when someone might hack your server or your host will go tits up, etc.

Even better is to keep another backup by CD that you make, say at least once a month. I admit I do not do this, but it would be a very smart idea.
