Are you sure Windows Media Player didn't just reassociate the icon for .mpg with .wmv? If you look in File Explorer, with extensions turned on, they should still be .mpg. I can't imagine the time it would take for some program to reconvert all of your vids.

Nope, they've all been changed to .wmv and open in a different viewer than the viewer the .mpg's opened in.
