How did they get so big? Several ways...

1) Timing - getting in early and taking the ride (those days are long gone)
2) hard work and patience - it takes work and time to build a brand and traffic
3) using illegal/unethical methods to build traffic - far too many of these over the last several years

Your tube site query probably falls under #3. If they're large they most likely are using stolen content to draw the volume of traffic, then selling something else to make money.
